Degree from IGNOU after Successful Completion
This is a two year Postgraduate programme in Mathematics that aims to produce Postgraduates in Mathematics who can work in areas of Computer Science that are related to Mathematics. With this aim, the programme offers a judicious mix of Core Mathematics courses that are comparable with the core courses of any other Mathematics Programme and elective courses in those areas of Computer Science that have a strong Mathematical content.
Programme Objectives
This programme has the following broad objectives:
To emphasis the relevance and usefulness of mathematics from an application point of view.
To equip the learners with the core mathematical knowledge and training necessary for use in many application areas.
To develop a work force that is equipped with the mathematical skills that are necessary in the changing industrial and economic scenario of the country.
To develop human resource in emerging disciplines such as Mathematical Biology, Computational Mathematics, Mathematical Economics, etc.
To promote collaborative research with industry and other user agencies.
Eligibility
Eligibility for the programme is a Mathematics major/honours degree (It could be B.A. or B.Sc.).
or
A B.A./B.Sc degree in which the students should have studied three subjects with equal weightage with Mathematics as one of the subjects.
Medium of Instruction
The programme is available only in English.
Duration
The minimum duration of the programme is two years, which is divided into four semesters. The maximum period allowed for completion of the programme is four years.
Programme Fee
After your admission to the programme is confirmed and you take admission to the programme, you have to pay the programme fees of Rs.7200/- in the first semester which includes registration fee of Rs.100/. For the second, third and fourth semesters, the programme fee is Rs. 7100/- per semester. Programme fee will be paid at the time of re-registration in the beginning of each semester, only by way of Demand Draft drawn in favour of IGNOU, New Delhi.
(University may revise the fee time to time. Please check with the advertisement or IGNOU website).
Programme Structure
Studies in this 2 year programme are divided into 4 semesters (2 semesters per year). The first semester is from January to June and second semester is from July to December of each year. To successfully complete this programme, you will have to earn 64 credits over a period of 2 to 4 years depending on your convenience. However, you will not be allowed to earn more than 16 credits in a semester.
These 64 credits comprise
Core Courses 34 credits, Elective Courses 26 credits, Project 4 credits : Total 64 credits

Core Courses
The core courses are designed to provide mathematical knowledge and techniques, necessary for use in many application areas. These core courses, which you will be studying during the first two semesters of your studies, will prepare you well to study the courses offered during the third and the fourth semesters. We have given the pre-requisite, qualifications needed (if any) for the courses, along with their syllabus in Sec. 5.
Elective Courses
The elective courses will expose you to the applications of mathematics in the area of computer sciences. The details of these courses are given in Sec. 6.
Project
Project work is compulsory for every learner. It aims to provide you with an opportunity to undertake hands-on work in some Industry/ Organizations/ R&D establishment/Institution. The Project Guide that is sent to you along with the fourth semester material will give you all the details related to the project work.
