Programme Objectives

  • To offer need based and tailor made academic programme for the specific need of technicians/equivalent level workforce engaged in electricity sector

  • To train, assess and certify the skills and competencies of electrical technicians, and to make them eligible for acquiring further knowledge and skill development training / educational qualification,

  • To provide better industrial education linkage by matching learner's educational needs while collaborating with professional bodies to meet the real work need,

  • To provide educational programme aiming at increased job potential and economic activities.

Target Group

  • Technicians/Equivalent tradesman or manpower working in electricity/power sector ;

  • Technicians having or pursuing trade certificate in Electrician /Lineman /Wireman /Electric Fitter or related trade;

  • Technician having license for Foreman/ Lineman/Wireman or license in relevant area of expertise;

  • Candidates having electrician apprenticeship;

  • Candidates having 10th /12th / ITI / Degree/Diploma, keen to pursue the course and aspiring to pursue a career in the electricity sector / working in relevant fields.

Medium of Instruction

  • Term End Exam (TEE) papers will be bilingual (in English and Hindi). Student is allowed to write in English or in Hindi.

  • Printed booklets: English (presently); Hindi translated material can be made available at Study Centre for photocopy or available in softcopy form ).

Eligibility

  • Technicians /Equivalent Tradesman or Manpower working in Electricity/Power Sector, adults 8th pass onwards,

OR

  • Candidates having 10th /12th /Degree/ Diploma/ ITI are eligible

Duration

6 Months (Minimum), and 2 Years (Maximum)

Programme Fee

The fee for the entire programme is Rs.3,600/- (University may revise the fee time to time. Please check with the advertisement or IGNOU website).

OEE-001 : ELECTRICITY AND SAFETY MEASURES (4 Credits*)

BLOCK 1: Elementary Electrical and Exposure to Tools

  • Unit 1: Basics of Electricity

  • Unit 2: Electrical Power System: Overview

  • Unit 3: Exposure to General Tools and Tackles


BLOCK 2: Earthing and Protection

  • Unit 4: Earthing

  • Unit 5: Protection


BLOCK 3: Electrical Safety Measures

  • Unit 6: Safety Elements

  • Unit 7: First Aid

  • Unit 8: Disaster Management

OEE-002 : POWER DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM - BASICS (4 Credits*)

BLOCK 1: Overview of Distribution System

  • Unit 1: Overhead Distribution System

  • Unit 2: Performance of Power Distribution system

  • Unit 3: Electrical Power Cables


BLOCK 2 : Transformer and Substation Equipment

  • Unit 4: Transformers

  • Unit 5: Major Substation Equipment


BLOCK 3 : Distribution Losses and Metering Technologies

  • Unit 6: Concept of Distribution Losses

  • Unit 7: Technical and Commercial loss Reduction

  • Unit 8: Metering System

(*1 Credit = 30 Hours of Study)


OEEL-001 : PRACTICAL IN POWER DISTRIBUTION ( 8 Credits)

This course requires you to have a real experience of demonstration or practical exposure on the topics that have been highlighted in your course book: Practical manual / relevant topics on power distribution. Learners are required to attempt option II, in case option (I) is not available:-


Option (I) :

Practical at concerned Learner Support Centre (LSC) or Programme Study Centres (PSC) or at attached work Centres premises, having facilities for demonstration and practical exposure on the topics/activities related to –

  • Electrical Power Substation or relevant electrical company- infrastructure, equipment, functioning etc.;

  • Electric Pole and fittings; Overhead Lines;

  • Cables-Overhead and Underground, Cable jointing;

  • Electrical Transformers;

  • Switchgears (includes fuses, switches, relays, isolators, circuit breaker, potential and current transformer, indicating device, lightning arresters, etc.); other substation equipment ;

  • Earthing (Pipe/Plate/Rod/Strip earthing); Electrical safety measures;

  • Energy Meters; Domestic Wiring Installations, etc.;

  • Other relevant topic on electrical power distribution as per industry need may be added.

Option (II) : In case option (I) is not available

  • To have real experience students can also arrange work of minimum 10 days duration (Practical Training or Internship or Field Visit), on their own.

  • Work can be at any Substation /Power Distribution Company / Electrical Industry/ Training Centre /Institution / Learner Support Centre etc.

  • Place should have facilities for demonstration /practical exposure on any/some of the topics as highlighted above that emerges out of the course syllabus or any other relevant topic on electrical power distribution as per industry need.

Dr. Rakhi Sharma is presently Associate Professor, Electrical Engineering, School of Engineering & Technology (SOET), Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), New Delhi . She was former Director, School of Engineering & Technology (SOET), Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), New Delhi, India (Aug2017-Aug2020). She holds doctoral degree, Ph.D. from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi, India and post graduation, Master of Technology (M.Tech.) with Distinction from Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology (MANIT),Bhopal, M.P. She obtained her Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.) degree in Electrical Engineering from Government Engineering College Jabalpur, M.P. Her areas of research interest are Solar Photovoltaic (PV) Systems, Renewable Energy, Life Cycle Assessment, Electrical Power Generation and Distribution. She has over 22+ years of teaching and research experience. She has been associated with designing and development of different distance learning technical courses/programme as coordinator. She has been associated with collaborative projects of IGNOU and Ministry of Power and work linkage programme of IGNOU-ISA on solar applications as Project Coordinator. She actively contributed/contributes as a member of various important committees of IGNOU and other organisations. Dr. Rakhi Sharma is the recipient of the prestigious All India University Gold Medal award for Innovations in Distance Education’-2010. She has been conferred with the All India University Gold Medal for theBest Research Paper Award’-2014 at IGNOU, New Delhi.
