Ohio Train Derailments

By Joshua Mahabir & Aayush Dahal

On February 3, 2023, a Norfolk Southern train was derailed when traveling with hazardous materials in East Palestine. A few weeks later, another train operated by Norfolk Southern derailed causing panic. Luckily, the train was not carrying hazardous materials.

During the weeks of these terrible incidents, many people were left terrified. The people of Ohio were told to drink water from water bottles and not from the tap because officials were still unsure whether or not tap water was safe to drink. The spill of chemicals have killed many fish, living in the water nearby. The estimated total of fish deaths was around 3,500. People have also reported headaches, coughs, rashes, and other symptoms that could have been from the accident. Experts have tried to figure out if these symptoms came from the polluted air but they have not concluded it to be the case so far.

On February 4, 2023, an agency went out to investigate the incident. By the end of the day, the agency had 17 contractors and coordinators working on the air quality. Even if this has been done, government officials have still received criticism since some people believed that the response was too late even if it was done only hours after everything happened.

Overall, this situation has affected thousands of people who were in the village of East Palestine and it was a truly deadly and horrifying event.
