Summer SCHOOL?
by Rey Preis
If you or your friends are failing a couple of classes, there is still hope! This enlightening new announcement brings a plan for those falling behind in their studies. WMS has announced a Summer School program for those with a 65< average (or who received a failing score on their Regents exams) to be able to retake their courses and/or regents exams over the summer in order to pass.
This will commence at the beginning of July until mid-August. Each day, with regard to the clothing, electronic, and transportation regulations, students will arrive at Woodmere Middle School, with a day of three ninety-minute periods for each course. There is also an attendance policy that states that a student with more than 3 absences will be removed from the course. At the end of the summer course, a final exam is proctored in order to test the student’s comprehension of the subject. This is an important decision for those who do not do so well in school, and need another shot, or those who don’t understand the subjects and need more guidance. Despite the understandable opposition to spending summertime in a classroom, many think this is an interesting decision and although this does not apply to me, I feel grateful to have such an accommodating school able to offer programs such as these. But here is what some other WMS community members had to say about this stirring news.
“The amount of people eligible for summer school due to the failing grades they are receiving is, in my opinion, due to the lack of effort put into the assignments and classes given, and I do not think these are the fault of the teachers.. There is an issue of absence of interest in class, & I struggle to think of solutions” -Fabian C, 8th-grade student.
“I think it may seem a bit random, but it’s well organized for students who weren’t doing well in school” -Eliana P, 8th-grade student.
Even though not all will take advantage of this, with reasonable and unreasonable opposition, and not all the information has become available yet, I advise you to be on the watch as more details arrive and to take this opportunity to better your grades for high school and the rest of your school career.
