Dark Side Of The Moon 50th Anniversary

By Levi Goldin

In the 1960s the band Pink Floyd was formed. In 1968 they made their first album “The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn.” and was followed up by “A Saucerful Full Of Secrets.” “A Saucerful Full Of Secrets” was the last album however with guitarist Syd Barret due to his use of drugs. He  was later replaced with David Gilmour who stayed with Pink Floyd to the end of his career. Their next albums were popular with their 7th album “Obscured by Clouds” was received the most popular until 1973 when Pink Floyd released “The Dark Side Of The Moon.” The album received immediate success and two singles from the album “Us And Them” and “Money” was on the charts for 15 years. The album had an estimated 45 million sales. The album also started the Pink Floyd golden age which lasted from 1973 to 1979 and consisted of 3 other albums, “Wish You Were Here” in 1975, “Animals” in 1977, and “The Wall” In 1979. After the golden age Pink Floyd had less success until their final album “The Endless River” album in 2014 which was a tribute to their dead keyboardist Richard Wright who passed away in 2008.

Recently on the Pink Floyd youtube channel they released a remastered version of the “Dark Side Of Moon” due to its 50th anniversary on March 1st. The remaster includes all 10 songs, “Speak To Me,” “Breathe (In The Air),” “On The Run,” “Time,” “The Great Gig In The Sky,” “Money,” “Us And Them,” “Any Color You Like,” “Brain Damage,” and lastly “Eclipse.” Throughout the internet the album is getting amazing reviews but it is not as good as the original album from 1973.  The success of the original album was due to innovative sounds including the clocks at the of “Time,” and the cast registers at the beginning of “Money.” Nowadays those sounds have been used time and time again so it isn’t as interesting as it used to be. It also received success due to its natural feeling. In conclusion the remaster is good however it doesn’t add to the quality of the original album.
