The school nurse visits school throughout the year. When your child starts in the Reception class, we will send out a general health questionnaire for you to complete. The nurse visits with the audiologist to carry out vision and hearing tests.
If a child becomes ill during the school day and it is felt that the child is no longer fit to be in school, then parents will be contacted at home or through the emergency daytime telephone numbers. A similar procedure is adopted in the case of accidents. It is therefore vital that we have an emergency contact number for daytime use. If your telephone number changes please inform us immediately.
If your child has a sickness bug or tummy upset, we ask that you keep them at home for 48 hours. This will help to prevent the bug spreading throughout the school.
Accidents in school are treated and recorded in an ‘accident book’. In the event of accidents that are more serious and when parents cannot be notified, children are taken to hospital.
We do on occasions have requests from parents to administer medication for their children while at school. It is important that such requests are managed in a manner that is appropriate, ensures the safety and privacy of all pupils and staff and fulfils the legal duty of care of staff.
All parent requests for the administration of prescribed medications to their child must be in writing on a school medication request form and must be supported by specific written instruction from the medical practitioner or pharmacist including the name of the pupil, dosage and time to be administered.
For pupils who have a potentially ‘life threatening medical condition` such as asthma, diabetes or severe allergy, staff will seek advice and training from external agencies e.g. school nurse, diabetic nurse and parents will be asked to health care plan to ensure procedures are followed correctly and the child is safe and well.
On any school journeys/outings, should the need at any time arise, teachers supervising the school journey will, having made reasonable efforts to contact parents, exercise their power to authorise any medical treatment for your child, which is advised by a qualified medical practitioner.
The medical forms can be completed online by clicking on the relevant button in the Forms section.
