The Dee Valley Federation is working towards the development of the new curriculum in Wales. We have been adapting and consolidating our practice and provision to make sure that we are working towards the important purposes and principles of The Curriculum for Wales.
The purposes of the curriculum in Wales should be that children and young people develop as:
• ambitious, capable learners, ready to learn throughout their lives
• enterprising, creative contributors, ready to play a full part in life and work
• ethical, informed citizens of Wales and the World
• healthy, confident individuals, ready to lead fulfilling lives as valued members of society.
The new curriculum in Wales will have six Areas of Learning and Experience:
• Expressive arts
• Health and well-being
• Humanities
• Languages, literacy and communication
• Mathematics and numeracy
• Science and technology.
These areas of learning aim to promote and underpin continuity and progression.
Weaving across the six Areas of Learning and Experience will be the three Cross Curriculum Responsibilities:
Literacy
Numeracy
Digital competence.
In The Dee Valley Federation, we follow the children’s interests and place great emphasis on child led learning and pupil voice. This enables our children to learn in the Areas of Learning and Experience and to apply their literacy, numeracy and digital competence skills through creative and innovative teaching and learning in partnership. Eg Mantle of the Expert.
This approach is used across the whole Federation and we aim to develop the ‘whole child’ so children embody the Four Purposes (listed above).
