Abstract: When observing the pre existing body of knowledge, several trends emerged in the field
of dance education and use in modern day. Many studies discussed the use of dance as an
intervention in classrooms, therapy settings, and beyond, but none of these studies discussed
what style of dance is easiest to use in these forums. The researcher constructed a quasi
experimental study that utilized 6 participants in Hampton High School who had little to no prior
dance experience who were given surveys and attended an in person experiment. Participants
learned three dances, one jazz, one hip hop, and one ballet combination, and self-reported their
enjoyment and eagerness to learn more about the style. The researcher found that jazz was the
easiest for participants and it was the most enjoyable, followed by hip hop, then ballet coming in
last. It must be taken into account that 5 of the 6 participants had partaken in a musical in the
past year, so they were familiar with the fast paced learning environment they were placed into
which propelled the success of the study. In future research, one should strive to test on true
novices to see if these results vary, and test to see if there is any correlation between athletic
success and dance performance.
