A Lesson on Civics: How X-men Comics can Address The Issue With Virtues Education
Abstract: Since the start of the 21st century, the United States has experienced a significant decline of connection and tolerance. Negligence and difficulty of Civic Virtues education is a cause of this. The study aimed to investigate how X-Men comics can help to improve comprehension and enjoyment of these virtues, when used in a medium sized suburban middle school environment. The participants were 6th grade students from a local middle school, who volunteered to participate after turning in debriefing and participation forms. A mixed method study was conducted, with a quantitative pretest utilizing a likert scale and qualitative post-test using open ended questions. The comics were found to be very effective, and the students reported on having a higher comprehension of civic virtues after reading and analyzing them. After further research is conducted, implementation of these comics could help to bring our nation back together, and inspire more collaboration and tolerance between American citizens.
