Abstract: Bilingualism provides positive cognitive abilities such as reduction in cognitive decline, adaptation in environmental changes, advantage in self expression and word comprehension and more. However, whenever the researcher tested if bilingual teens have better retention skills compared to monolingual teens, it is found that there is no difference between monolingual and bilingual retention skills. While scholars have acknowledged bilingual individuals having better cognitive abilities when compared to monolingual individuals, a gap knowledge remains pertaining to how bilingualism will affect retention in english vocabulary. This study utilizes a survey approach using Scholastic Assessment Test given vocabulary to determine how bilingualism impacts retention compared to monolingual individuals. The findings of this research suggest that since both p-values was greater than 0.05, the researcher fails to reject the null hypothesis, and no significant conclusion can be reached. Additionally, it was found that monolingual individuals performed better when comparing the participants second test to the first test. These findings suggest that the implementation of bilingual education could be used to improve cognitive abilities but bilingual education does not impact retention.Â
