Totaling a loss of $25,000, a fire at 367 and 369 Atlantic as well as 28 and 30 Purchase occurred around 6:15 in the morning on May 9, 1883. The fire was reported to box forty-seven, the closest box to 359-439 Atlantic Avenue, and was seemingly difficult for authorities to put out. The bottom three floors including the basement were heavily damaged, and the businesses that resided within those floors all faced losses, but were at least partially insured. Brick walls that separated the building from the bordering plots prevented the fire from spreading further that 367-369. Although it took a great effort, the fire was put out as a result of authorities working to stop it on both Atlantic and Purchase. The building was owned by Franklin King both according to Atlascope and the article. Below is an image of Franklin King's plot from 1883, the year of the fire. The building was 2281 square feet, and five stories in total. Franklin King was to the owner of two separate plots on Atlantic Ave. 359-439 in 1883, with the other one being located at 399-409 Atlantic.Â
