Studying abroad is a life-changing experience that fosters students' personal, academic, and professional growth. . This requires planning very early in a student’s college career. As early as their first year, students should talk to their dean in the Center for University Advising as well as their faculty advisor in their declared major department. Here are some factors students should consider from the start:
• To study abroad, students must work with the Office of Study Abroad Programs to receive approval. Students are able to fulfill distribution/major/minor requirements abroad, with approval from the respective department chairs, deans, and the Office of Study Abroad Programs.
• Hofstra offers several different options for studying abroad, so no matter what major a student chooses, they can fit study abroad into a four-year academic plan. Hofstra sponsors several three-week programs during the January Session, as well as summer programs and international exchange programs. Some faculty incorporate international travel over spring break as part of the course requirements or as a capstone event after the semester concludes. Hofstra also supports many study abroad programs offered by established private providers and other universities.
• Many programs do not require prior language experience, and the courses are often taught in English. It is recommended that students have some language experience and/or take a language course while abroad. If students are participating in a language-immersion study abroad program, it is typically a requirement to complete at least four semesters of language study before departure.
