The Health + Wellness team at Student Health seeks to advance the health of the Hofstra student body through direct clinical care and advance the health of the entire campus through health promotion and education. We encourage all students to reach out to us should they have any questions.
Students should come to campus with an adequate supply of any prescription medication. Many local pharmacies deliver to campus or are accessible by using the Hofstra shuttle.
Prescriptions from Student Health or the student’s own healthcare provider can be filled at any area pharmacy. The Health + Wellness team is available to students who have questions or need assistance with medications they already take.
All students are encouraged to maintain health insurance coverage during their time at Hofstra University. If a student is not currently covered under a plan, they can visit the New York State of Health Official Health Plan Marketplace to find an insurance provider.
All students should enter their insurance information into the patient portal, accessible through the Hofstra portal or at hofstra.edu/medicat. Visits to Student Health, as well as other services offered by the Health + Wellness team, are not billed to a student’s health insurance. However, lab tests, immunizations, and prescriptions will be billed by the providers of those services.
If a student is referred to a local hospital, community healthcare provider, laboratory, pharmacy, or other outside health service, the cost of care is the student’s responsibility. We can assist in finding reduced-cost care in the community.
During the semester: Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-7 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.
During summer and winter breaks: Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.

We can accommodate patients by appointment or on a walk-in basis.
Students may schedule appointments online through the Medicat patient portal, accessible through the Hofstra portal. This is the fastest and easiest way to schedule an appointment and update documentation prior to your visit. The Medicat patient portal will show availability for same-day appointments, so that students can access care when it is most convenient for them.
All patients should complete their consent for treatment, medical record forms, and current insurance information on the secure Medicat patient portal prior to the visit. Information on how to upload this information can be found at hofstra.edu/shc.
What should a student do if they are feeling unwell?
Students should make an appointment with Student Health through the Medicat patient portal, by calling 516-463-6745, or by visiting the Wellness and Campus Living Center, North Campus.
What does it mean to be medically withdrawn from classes?
When a student is medically withdrawn from classes, that usually means that they are missing proof of the immunizations required by New York state. When medically withdrawn, a residential student must also leave their residence hall. Once the required documents are in the portal, the Health + Wellness team will verify the information; once verified, the hold will be removed, and the student will be re-enrolled in their classes. Students receive multiple reminders of this requirement from the University and the Health + Wellness team prior to the deadline. To avoid being medically withdrawn, please keep an eye on your Pride email account and call us with any questions or concerns.
Does Student Health staff write prescriptions?
Student Health is staffed with nurse practitioners who can can write prescriptions as clinically appropriate.
If a student takes medication on an ongoing basis, how can prescriptions be refilled?
A student’s primary care provider (PCP) or appropriate specialist should provide the prescriptions for chronic conditions. If needed, Student Health can see the patient and prescribe, but this should be discussed with the PCP or specialist and Student Health in advance.
What health-related items should a student bring to campus?
• A copy of the insurance card
• Name, address, and telephone number of the student’s primary care provider
• Knowledge of name and dosage of medications that have been prescribed
• Emergency contact name and telephone number(s)
• Thermometer
• Pain reliever/fever reducer
• Hot/cold pack
• Elastic bandage
• Adhesive bandages
• Gauze pads and tape
• Over-the-counter cold/allergy relief medicines
• For contact lens wearers, have eyeglasses available (in case of eye injury/infection or loss of contact lenses).
Can parents know if their students visited Student Health and discuss the treatment?
Student Health and most Health + Wellness care is confidential. With few exceptions, if the patient is 18 years of age or older, we do not discuss their treatment with anyone until they give us permission. We encourage all students to involve family members in their care, as appropriate, and we welcome the opportunity to facilitate these discussions.
To which hospital will a student be transported, if necessary?
Students will be transported to the nearest appropriate hospital, a list of which can be found athofstra.edu/afterhourscare. The responding medical personnel typically decide which hospital is most appropriate for the situation.
