The Office of Student Employment offers various work opportunities to Hofstra students. Through on-campus employment, students can enrich their academic experiences by applying learned skills in practical settings, while earning income to help defray personal expenses.
Students who work on campus practice time management, organization, and communication skills alongside peers and professionals of diverse backgrounds, experiences, and cultures. Additionally, on-campus employment offers the convenience of proximity to classes and residence halls, flexible hours, and, of course, a connection to the Hofstra community to inspire future opportunities.
Most academic and administrative offices on campus employ Hofstra students in hourly, extracurricular, research assistant/academic intern, leadership, and/or graduate assistantship positions. For more information, visit the Office of Student Employment website at hofstra.edu/studentemployment.
If you are interested in working in an hourly position, a current listing of student employment positions can be found on Handshake at https://hofstra.joinhandshake.com/login (accessible through the Apps section of the Hofstra portal). If you are interested in other opportunities (research assistant/academic intern, extracurricular, leadership), please inquire with departments directly about opportunities that may be available. Graduate students interested in graduate assistantships should visit https://www.hofstra.edu/about/jobs/jobs_careers_at_hofstra.cfm?jobType=graduate_assistantships to view a current listing of available opportunities. All students must follow the instructions on the job postings to apply. Most applications request a cover letter, resume, and class schedule to determine suitability. Assistance with application materials, including but not limited to resumes and cover letters, is offered through the Center for Career Design & Development.
To be eligible for student employment, a student must be matriculated and enrolled at least half-time, which is 6 semester hours for undergraduate students and 4.5 semester hours for graduate students. International students and students seeking graduate assistantships must be enrolled full-time.
Non-international students are permitted to work a maximum of 25 hours per week during the academic year and 30 hours per week during school breaks and summer, subject to department budget availability and/or Federal Work-Study allowance. International students are permitted to work up to 20 hours per week during the academic year and 30 hours per week during school breaks and summer, subject to department budget availability as well as the terms and conditions of their visa.
New student employees will receive a communication from the Office of Student Employment prompting them to complete onboarding paperwork, including a personal data form, tax forms, Federal Form I-9 (Employment Eligibility Verification), and Hofstra policy signoffs. Students will need to present original, unexpired Form I-9 acceptable documents that establish their identity and authorization to work in the United States. To view a list of acceptable documents, please visit the USCIS webpage (https://www.uscis.gov/i-9-central/form-i-9-acceptable-documents). We cannot accept photocopies or faxes of I-9 identification. If a student intends to obtain a position through the Office of Student Employment, they are required to complete this onboarding procedure BEFORE they are permitted to work.
Federal Work-Study (FWS) is a form of financial aid that can only be earned through working an hourly student employment position. All hourly student employment positions are opportunities for FWS-eligible students to earn their award. FWS eligibility is determined by Student Financial Services; students must file a FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) to be evaluated for Federal Work-Study eligibility, as well as other types of aid, each year. If a student is eligible for Federal Work-Study, the student’s financial aid award letter will list the dollar amount of the Federal Work-Study grant. The student may also check the Hofstra portal to see if they are awarded Federal Work-Study grant money. For further information regarding financial aid packages, visit the Student Financial Services website (https://www.hofstra.edu/financial-aid/) and click on Meet Your Counselor, email studentfinancialservices@hofstra.edu, or call 516-463-8000. The Office of Student Financial Services is located in Room 206 Memorial Hall, South Campus.
Students may not work more than one hourly student employment position simultaneously.
