Actions of School-based Mental Health Experts

School counselors and other school-based mental health professionals support the social emotional well being of our students. School-based mental health providers are specially trained in school system functioning and learning, as well as how students’ behavior and mental health impacts their ability to be successful in school. Their work promotes social-emotional and mental well-being so that students are able to participate in academic tasks each day, fostering literacy, specifically, as they

  • Work with school administrators and instructional staff to create a school-wide culture that values literacy

  • Incorporate text within social emotional learning activities

  • Encourage writing as a way to communicate
