Visions, Goals, and Alignment for Literacy 2020-2025
This plan serves as a driver of instructional practices for Henrico County Public Schools to create a district-wide culture that values literacy. Our plan seeks to strengthen our instruction, maximize our resources and inspire a passion for life-long learning. We believe literacy is a key building block for all learning and that by strengthening our literacy instruction we can enhance instruction in all areas.
With approximately 50,000 students attending Henrico County Public Schools, we are fortunate to have a student population that brings a wide range of diversity to our division. While our overall reading achievement, as measured by the Virginia Standards of Learning assessments, is within two points of the State average, we are not satisfied. We believe that our students are capable of much more and we are committed to helping them to reach their full potential. Additionally, while the majority of our schools are fully accredited, eight of our 67 schools are accredited with conditions. We are committed to closing achievement gaps and dedicated to ensuring the success of all students, including bolstering our instructional and resources so that all 67 schools in Henrico County are accredited without conditions. This plan provides a deliberate pathway to address the needs of all students by providing access to culturally relevant materials, ensuring purposeful use of core materials and curriculum, and refining the implementation of evidence-based instructional strategies. We believe in providing access to equitable instruction that builds upon students’ strengths, values diversity, provides the necessary support to help all students achieve, and engages all stakeholders. By strengthening literacy and addressing opportunity gaps, we are empowering students to be life-ready and prepared for postsecondary success in college, career and life.
