Literacy Framework
Guided by the HCPS Instructional Model, teachers are empowered to make purposeful decisions that draw from evidence-based best practices in the areas of comprehension, vocabulary, fluency, phonemic awareness and phonics. A focus on creating a learner-centered community further defines HCPS literacy instruction, and teachers have the flexibility to meet the diverse academic, cultural, and social-emotional needs of our students throughout the literacy block.
LifeReady Literacy instruction reflects these characteristics:
Literacy involves reading, writing and communication.
Skills and strategies are taught and applied in authentic text.
Reading instruction involves learning phonological awareness, phonics, word recognition and identification, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.
Writing instruction involves writing to express thoughts and ideas for authentic purposes and includes practice in the use of mechanics and conventions.
Students use reading and writing as tools for learning in the content areas.
Instruction occurs through four key instructional contexts: whole group activities, small group activities, literacy extensions and writing workshops. Time allocation and instructional focus vary, depending on the grade level, to best meet the literacy needs of students in all stages of development. While literacy may look slightly different at different grades, the key elements are present in a combination that strengthens students’ literacy foundation.
