Reading Horizons is a research based instructional framework for teaching phonics and phonemic awareness using the Orton Gillingham method. It is used in K-3 for daily instruction and Grades 4-5 differentiated small groups.
EL and EC resource teachers can also be provided with a kit and training (the older kits). Reading Horizons is sequenced in a strategic way to deliver explicit, systematic phonics instruction. It is meant to be taught systematically and to mastery.
Reading Horizons Kits
All kits are to be barcoded before checking out to teachers. The boxed kits are the new kits. There are only enough newer kits for teachers in grades K-3.
Teachers are responsible for all parts of the kit to include posters, and decodable books.
The older kits (in bags) are to stay barcoded in the media center to be used for other educators who work with students (EC, EL, 4th-5th small groups)
Sight Word Instruction -
Use Reading Horizons Most Common Words list in lessons. Teachers can add additional words as well but using these words will integrate learning throughout the day.
These lists of words will also be important to the decodability of the Little Books and Transfer Cards. Teach sight words using phrases and in context.
Reading Horizons Accelerate Website - The website can be found at www.rhaccelerate.com. This website offers digital versions of teacher manuals, blackline masters, instructional videos, and a lesson planning tool. It is also the site for training modules for teachers, administrators, and coaches. All teachers and coaches will complete the Introductory module,
Lessons and Pacing - Reading Horizons Discovery is paced in our district pacing guide. There are some general guidelines per grade level that should be considered.
Lessons can take approximately 1-2 days each if needed.
Lessons can be divided up (chunked) to fit the 30-40 minutes time. Find a good stopping place each day, review the next day and continue teaching the next day until the lesson is complete (as needed).
Remember CORE 4 everyday (review, instruct, dictation, transfer)
Read and practice the lessons before teaching them. There are videos for each lesson under "Lesson Preview" and a note taking feature for teachers to internalize the lesson. Teachers can also watch videos on the Reading Horizons Accelerate website that will help model strategies before teaching.
PLCs should discuss, reflect, practice and plan as a grade level team.
The 30-40 minutes expected teaching time is a combination of whole group, small group, and station work.
The lessons can be used one on one as needed to provide intervention, especially in 4th and 5th grade.
All K-5 classes are rostered with Clever to the Reading Horizons platform. 4th and 5th grade teachers can log in to find all students rostered and lessons available. 4th and 5th grade teachers should use the 3rd grade curriculum for intervention.
The Clubhouse software works on a student’s needs automatically but teachers should also assign work based on lessons delivered in class. This includes unit tests, check-ups, etc.
Assessment Guidance
Readiness Check: Prior to instruction
MOY: After lesson 64 is a good milestone, but it should typically happen around the same time that you take your other MOY assessments.
EOY: After all lessons have been taught (or at the end of the year, whichever comes sooner)
A window is given in our district calendar to help guide
Assessment Guide: Technical Summary for additional context
Skill Checks are given as lessons are completed..they are automatically sent to students by the program once a lesson is or skill is completed. These are formative assessments for teachers to make decisions. The program will use this data to make small groups for the teacher.
Readiness Check: Assign or launch it from August 26, 2024 - September 6, 2024: it will take between 10 - 20 minutes for students to complete
Mid Year (MOY) Cumulative Skill Check: Assign or launch it from January 6-17, 2025: it will take about 15 - 20 minutes for students to complete
End of Year (EOY) Cumulative Skill Check: Assign or launch it from April 28, 2025 -May 9, 2025: it will take about 15-20 minutes for students to complete
