Music

Intent STATEMENT

The national curriculum for music aims to ensure that children can use their voices expressively and creatively by singing songs and rhymes, play, create and experiment with tuned and un-tuned instruments and listen with understanding to a range of high-quality live and recorded music

At Hampton Wick Infant and Nursery School the intention is to provide a variety of musical experiences for all children to extend beyond the national curriculum. Through an excellent curriculum, children are encouraged to develop their understanding and enjoyment of music with an active involvement. Singing, listening, composing, performing and evaluating music from a wide range of musical styles and traditions is valued, and respect for a range of musical genres is encouraged.

All children are potentially musical and we aim to foster a curiosity for the subject and build upon their existing knowledge and experience. Music by its nature, is a practical and creative subject which complements and extends to other areas of classroom work. Musical activities should develop pupils’ spiritual, cultural and social development. In addition, it promotes the development of pupils’ self-esteem, expressive arts and personal expression, building lasting confidence and skills in these areas. At Hampton Wick we also seek to give children wider opportunities to further their love of music by providing extra-curricular clubs and experiences accessible to all.
