Maths
Intent STATEMENT
At Hampton Wick Infant and Nursery School we have high expectations for all of our children and believe that everyone can become a confident and skilled mathematician. We strive for all children to be enthusiastic and curious about mathematics and to understand its importance in our everyday lives.
We want children to explore, question, trial, spot patterns, generalise and solve problems, developing inquisitive minds and not being afraid to take risks. We believe children learn most effectively by being actively involved in the teaching and learning within the classroom. We seek to develop children’s ability to work independently and collaboratively to solve mathematical problems. Our role as educators is to equip children with the skills to find answers to their own mathematical questions and apply their mathematical knowledge to other subjects and in real life.
We intend for children:
To become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics, including through varied and frequent practice with increasingly complex problems over time, so that they develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
To communicate their ideas about mathematics clearly using appropriate vocabulary and reasoning mathematically by following a line of enquiry, making links, building upon knowledge of mathematical relationships and developing an argument using mathematical language.
To solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of routine and non-routine problems with increasing sophistication, including breaking down problems into a series of simpler steps and persevering in seeking solutions.
