English

INTENT STATEMENT

At Hampton Wick Infant and Nursery School we intend to provide children with an excellent start in their English education that enables them to speak, read and write fluently. We aim to immerse children in high quality texts, ensuring they further extend an already well-developed vocabulary.

Our English curriculum is built upon a foundation of sound speaking, listening and communication.  Our aim is that children at Hampton Wick process and experiment with language, develop their own ideas and speak articulately.  We want to inspire children to be confident and to communicate their ideas to others while continuing to develop a rich and diverse vocabulary.

We want our children to be avid, fluent and enthusiastic readers, who read frequently and widely, with an appreciation of literary heritage. We want them to read for pleasure and to be able to express opinions about the texts that they read. Our phonics lessons aim to provide children with the tools to decipher and understand new vocabulary, supporting their wider reading development.

We have high expectations in the children’s writing skills and aim that they write with confidence and independence.  We want children to write for a variety of purposes and audiences whilst developing their own individual flair.

Our school passionately believes that every child is entitled to know the joy of a book.  Literacy is empowering and allows children to succeed in life.  We are tenacious that every child is a reader.
