Art and Design

Intent STATEMENT

At Hampton Wick we value Art and Design as an important part of children’s entitlement to a broad and balanced curriculum. Art and Design provides children with the opportunities to develop and extend skills and an opportunity to express their individual interests, thoughts and ideas.

We aim to engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design.  We strive to ensure the progressive development of knowledge and skills.  Children’s observation and recording from first-hand experience is valued and supported by the use of our stimulating environment.  We seek to develop children’s creativity and imagination, developing this alongside competence in the control of materials and tools.  By the time children leave Hampton Wick Infant and Nursery School, we wish for them to be proficient in a wide variety of art and design techniques and processes, with an awareness of the visual and tactile elements including: colour, pattern and texture, line and tone, shape, form and space. We foster an enjoyment and appreciation of the visual arts and want pupils to know about significant artists, craftspeople and designers.  We intend for our pupils to show an awareness of the roles and purposes of art and design in different times and cultures, being able to analyse works using the language of art and design.

Above all, we want pupils to be confident approaching artwork; to feel a strong sense of achievement and to value the impact of art within their lives.
