Keuffel & Esser 4083 Log Log Vector
The 4083 Log-Log Duplex Vector family was manufactured in the United States since 1939 to 1967. It was fabricated from mahogany coated with white celluloid, where scales were engraved, glass cursor with metallic frames screwed to plastic ends, and held together with metal end pieces. This models evolved from the prime vector model 4093-3, and were produced in two sizes: 4083-3 (12" rule, scales 10"), and 4083-5 (22" rule, scales 20"); in 1962 the models were renamed 68-1434 and 68-1424 respectively. During these 28 years, there were at least four versions of this model, differing on the locations of its 21 scales. The scales were always the same except in the models produced after 1954, when the decimal ST scale was changed to decimal radian SRT scale.
In my collection I have a 4083-3 and a 4083-5 from the 1949-1953 versions. In this models the scales are distributed: LL02 LL03 DF [CF CIF CI C] D LL3 LL2 on the front face, and L LL01 LL1 A [B T ST S] D Th Sh1 Sh2 on the back face.
In 1939. the prices for these models were: $14.00 for the 4083-3 ($307.43 in 2023 USD), and $31.70 for the 4083-5 ($696.10 in 2023 USD). In 1962 the prices were: $29.50 for the 12'' model ($ 293.87 in 2023 USD), and $65.50 for the 24" model ($.652.48 in 2023 USD)
As their predecessor 4093 model, the 4083 rules were mainly used for engineering applications, and specially in the Electric Engineering field. An skillful user was able to solve the next problems with two-three decimals precision:
