After three long years of absence from an in-school Halloween Movie Night due to the pandemic, the Student Council decided to host the annual tradition once again on November 4, 2022, to mark the event’s return! The previous two Halloween Movie Nights were hosted online due to the pandemic. However, it didn’t create the same experience and atmosphere as hosting the event in school and watching the movie with your friends. The goal of the event was to create an interactive community gathering between students of different year levels and provide a fun Friday night outing for the students.
Upon entering the MPH, the students were greeted with receiving their complementary serving of a snack and beverage, then they could choose wherever they wanted to sit with their friends from the space provided. Students were encouraged to bring their own pillows and blankets for extra comfort during the night! After all of the students were let in and the doors were closed, came the moment everyone had been waiting for, the movie! The lights were dimmed, the student council vice presidents made an announcement, and the movie started playing. The students personally voted for the movie that was screened, which ended up being “The Grudge.” However, since the film was rated PG13 and most of the year 7 students were under 13, Pak Steve sent a permission letter to the parents of the year 7 students to verify if their child was permitted to watch the movie. Throughout the movie, loud cries and screams were heard during jumpscares and intense scenes with students sheltering their eyes and ears with their pillows or blankets, and faint cries of relief sounded when it was over.
In the end, students had mixed feelings about the movie, some liked it, some didn’t, and some couldn’t sleep at night because of it. However, everyone had a good time during the event and were all elated that they could finally experience a Halloween Horror Movie Night in school with their friends after three uncertain years. Snacks, beverages, pillows and blankets, dimmed lights, friends, and watching a horror movie with other people can never go wrong.
Here are some words from one of our Student Council Vice-Presidents, Haudy, “Seeing all of these students in this room once again for Halloween Movie Night after three long years of absence has been such a rewarding experience for the entire student council team and me. Knowing that all our hard work resulted in the success of this event has made us more than joyful. The last in-school Halloween Movie Night was when I was in year 8, and I was a part of the audience, so now that I worked on creating the event and was part of the team behind the planning and success of this event has been very rewarding and surreal.”
