In lieu of our usual Week Without Walls, we invited the team from Outward Bound to join us on campus for a day packed with fun and interesting activities.
Participating students from years 7, 8, 9 and 10 were allocated to groups within their year level. Each group had an Outward Bound instructor that stayed with them throughout the day.
The students participated in games and exercises that were designed to develop relationships through trust building. The students also had to solve several group challenges throughout the day - all designed to further strengthen community and engage students as critical and creative thinkers. It was fantastic to see students challenged to step outside of their comfort zone and to listen to the resulting reflections on personal growth and group competencies.
Here is a small selection of comments and photographs from participating students and teachers.
Lea Donosepoetro, year 9
"I found Outward Bound Day to be enjoyable because of my teammates. We encouraged each other to accomplish the challenges and there were many funny moments too."
Krishna Putra Sutisna Sigar (year 7): Outward bound was a really fun experience for me because I could play fun games with my friend and bond more. There were a lot of games where we had to work together to win. 2 games in my opinion are the games that really made us work together as a team to find the solution. Those games were the save the egg from cracking, and filling 30 numbers as fast as possible. For the filling 30 numbers as fast as possible, my team has 13 people, so we discussed which numbers we had to fill, and each of us has our own role. For the save the egg from cracking, we had to make a mechanism so when the egg is dropped, it wouldn’t break. Our team won that one, our egg didn't break at all!. My favorite game was where all of us sat in a circle, and the instructor gave us beats to follow, it was really cool. So in a summary Outward bound was really fun and helpful to bond with our friends.
Jasmine, year 9
"My favorite thing about my outward bound day was simply working together with my group in all of the activities and creating a new bond with my friends. I also enjoyed having fun and laughing while being with my group"
Sofia, year 9
"My favourite activity for outward bound would be the cube activity. Since we all had to pass through the cube without touching the sides, we had to work together to find the best ways for each person. Since some people were more flexible or stronger than others, we had to base our decisions on those. At some point, as a group, we carried a person through the opposite sides of the cube. "
Nicole Careena Reeves (year 7): During outward bound we were put in groups and we played a few activities that required teamwork. There were a few activities that I really liked and would want to do again. We played a blindfold game where we were put into partners and one was blindfolded and the other had to guide them using their voice. We played a game where we held hands as an entire group and had to get a hula hoop around the circle in a certain amount of time. After that we played against the other teams with a game that required strategy and group discussion. We played a game that I called "30 numbers" (I forgot the actual name) where we had to step on 30 numbers as a group and beat other teams record. The rules were that 2 people couldn't say the same number, you had to step on the number and it had to be in order (so like 1,2,3,4 and so on).
My team was having troubles at the time so we gathered and started making strategies on how to make this easier. The activity united us as a class and taught us how to trust each other and how to work in a group. It taught us how to trust each other's opinions. It was a really fun experience and I would want to do it again sometime because it's really a time where I can connect with people in class I'm not close with and bond with them. So Outward bound was just a really fun experience and also teaches a really good lesson.

I think my experience was fun and challenging. We did a couple of activities (a variety of activities) such as spider web, putting a ring to a stick until playing domikado (an indonesian chant game) with our team. Some of these activities require trust and solidarity for our teammates. The activities that we did with our group is that we also tried transferring water in cans into a bucket with 3 ropes and a flimsy tire. I feel that during this activity, it got me and my group collaborating a lot. We had to get people to pull the ropes hard enough and people that directed the motion of the contraption.
