On 15, November, 2022 we had a guest speaker. My teacher (Ibu Endang Puji Astuti) requested her assistance to talk about Sustainability, which requires collaboration and the responsible management of resources. On that day the Year 4, Year 5, and Year 6 students had the opportunity to learn about the management of resources. Our guest speaker's name is Ibu Elviera T. Putri, she is an environmentalist. She is also an expert/professional in Oil/Gas Company (Exxonmobil Oil Indonesia).
Ibu Elviera shared with us information about non-renewable and renewable resources. She told us that it is very important to manage the non-renewable resources because the amount of that resources is limited. Resource waste should be avoided. Using public transit instead of private cars, for example, tends to save precious petrol. Alternative energy options like renewable energy, wind energy, biomass (biogas), etc can be used to supplement fossil fuels in our daily life. She also emphasized that there should not be too much plastic. While plastic itself is not a natural resource (it is man-made), it uses a great deal of fuel in its production process. At the end of the session, Ibu Elviera gave us a quiz and prizes for those who can answer the questions.
Wow!!! It was a great culminating activity; Simple Machines and Scientific Forces Unit Themed Expo under the unit ‘How The World Works’ that was done on Wednesday, November, 16th in the MPH. In this expo, we shared our understanding of what simple machines were used, how scientific forces work in our model, and how the forces can change under different conditions. We were excited to have a lot of parents, students, and teachers come to this expo.
There are some activities that we prepared for the visitors besides presentations. We made a scavenger hunt that visitors can answer quizzes based on the information they got from the presenters. We also let visitors try out our models. We reflected on this culminating activity and thought that this is a good way to represent our feelings, our communication and thinking skills, and to celebrate what we have done with our learning.
In this special event, we also presented our creativity and knowledge by creating the models to solve the problems we have in daily life and explain our understanding of simple machines and scientific forces through the models. The IB learner profiles we demonstrated are:
Communicator - we express ideas and information confidently and creatively in a variety of modes of communication. We also work effectively and willingly in collaboration with others.
Risk-taker - We combine knowledge, conceptual understandings, and skills to create a model as a solution to our problems.
Thinker - we examine new ideas when we create a model according to the design cycle.
On November 14th and 18th, the Year 5 had the important role of being the people in charge for Upacara Bendera after a delay for almost two and half years. Aurora, Keenan, and Kira were the students assigned to raise the flag and they said; ‘We felt a bit nervous since the whole primary was going to watch us but once we got the hang of it we felt confident”.
We felt touched and proud of our role. Now, we’re really proud of the action we did to honor our national heroes. Even when our friend, Anka recited a poem about the struggle of Indonesian Heroes in the past and it made us much more serious to learn. Thank you.
The Ande Ande Lumut (Panji tales) was performed on the 1st of December in the Global Jaya Theater. As part of the assessment for the cumulative activity, Year 5 students create a performance to show their knowledge, skills, and understandings gained throughout the unit ‘How We Express Ourselves’. Students are expected to be able to share their understanding of the types of arts and the process of creating a performance that combines both the performing arts (music, dance and drama) and visual arts elements (stage properties, costume designs and recording).
The process of this mini musical drama is done by the students under teacher’s supervision. The work carried out included: create the script, audition for the cast, practice dialogues for the scenes, practice music with different groups and instruments, design the stage properties and decorations, design the costumes, record the background video for some part of the scene, practice singing some songs that were part of the scenes.
Here is the interview report and reflection of the Year 5 Students.
Q:Did you find it difficult to practice and create a drama production?
A: We had a long journey, but we were extremely pleased with the results. Thanks to the teachers, we’re very happy with our results. Thank you to Ibu Endang, Pak Rully, Pak Nick, Ibu Primi, Ibu Nadya, Pak Herman, and Pak Udin, the year 5 Moms, and to our lovely students that played a part in our drama production!
Q:The original story had to be modified. Was this a difficult task?
A: In short, yes, as we had to change the story in a way that was more suitable for modern times. We did not have an easy job but we worked hard to come up with a solution that was impressive.
Q:How did you feel about the play in our own opinion?
A:The play was excellent and we were very proud of all of the process. We’re delighted that so many people feel the same way as we do about the play. This was such a creative way to display our findings and research about traditional stories, especially Panji Tales. We also thought the play was good, but we still think we could have done better. However, we’re delighted to have achieved this in such a short period of time.
Reflection and Comments
Raisya: This musical drama is good, they put a lot of effort into the musical and it represents Indonesian culture a lot.
Faiqa: I like how the musical drama production presents Indonesian culture. The musical drama production was great.
Rafa: The Musical Drama was great! I like how everyone sang well and made their lines perfect and had the feeling of watching a movie. I think everyone played their part well, some characters went above and beyond.
Nabila: I feel that we did a great job! We did our best and we could show the story's timeline. The songs, the dances, and everything in general was great! I loved the beautiful colors, it was very colorful and traditional at the same time. We played the real instrument and not from a record and I personally felt that it was a great, small detail.
Ditra: I loved the performance. My favorite part was when everyone danced and I am really happy that the play went smoothly.
Manggala: I love the fact that the music drama was made with our own words and it made me a communicator. I danced and I sang. It was amazing. We all worked hard for it and we tried our best and it worked out! I still remember it days after it finished.
Ian: The music drama has taught us lots of skills and knowledge. Year 5 communicated to make a perfect and detailed story, we thought about what our class could do, and what the limits were.
Jaden: I liked the music because it matches the plot of the story.
Valeia: Everybody paid attention and didn't forget their parts and lines and all of the vocals were nice.
Anshu: I learned a lot about acting and music. A lot of people also loved it.
Nathan: It was fun and we performed in front of other classes. We also got to dress up as the character that we played.
Eden: Amazing!! The drama production was funny, fun and enjoyable.
Clea: Great story, lighting, and props!!
Anka: Everything was positive. I liked the storyline because it was very good and interesting. And also how every character had their own personality. There was also more than one song. That is very uncommon among other assemblies. That is what made ours different.
Kama: Everyone did their job/task well.
Amar: It was great! Maybe it could have been extended a bit with more items, more battles, and more exciting parts. It seems more secrets could have been shown like if Chandra Kirana had a secret twin or had a magical pet or animal.
Katherine: It was great! People acted okay-ish backstage but the acting was great! I like the fact that the teachers (you guys) showed us how to act instead of just descriptions! You also showed us how to say our lines so they wouldn’t sound "plain" and actually sound interesting with character.
