The Reception students have enjoyed exploring simple, fun science activities and building their research, thinking, and communication skills. Magic blooming flowers is a brilliant science investigation using paper, coloured pencils, or markers and a bowl of water.
The students gasped in surprise as the paper flowers unfolded right in front of their eyes! In this simple experiment, they watched the process of paper absorbing very rapidly. When the paper gets wet, it swells, causing the folded petal of the magic flower to open up.
Teachers had been preparing students for our Who We Are guest speaker event on Friday, November 25th. Five family members shared artifacts and presentations about who they are at home, in their jobs, and in other roles, so our young inquirers could better understand our Central Idea: Who people are in relation to others and their surroundings. This event leads up to our culminating activity; Reception's Got Gratitude! Our 5-year-olds are in groups preparing a special breakfast celebration centered around appreciation and gratitude for our school community members, whom, throughout the unit, they have interviewed and inquired more about. Our children are preparing a song to perform for our workers, cleaners, leadership, gardeners, canteen workers, and nurses integrated with our Music strands. They are organizing their breakfast preparations in groups, creating invitations for their chosen community members during Civics lessons, applying art techniques for decorations and tablecloths, and building social and communication skills during practice role-playing before December 1st.
