There are certain stigmas attached to being in PTA and volunteering at school. These stigmas usually hinder parents to be more involved in their children’s school life. However, being in Global Jaya PTA is proving those stigmas wrong. It is an enriching and rewarding experience for me. It is a chance for me to be involved and connected with the children’s education.
In the PTA, I am entrusted as a part of the External Committee. This means all matters including communication and collaboration of the PTA and the school with outside community, falls under this Committee. Through the purview of this Committee, we are able to collaborate with people outside of GJS as well as communicate to the wider community what is GJS all about. We hosted several talks and IG Live on relevant topics such as on School Health Protocols, Child Protection and Safety, Students’ Wellbeing, as well as Learning Diversity. From all these sessions, not only do I gain knowledge and understanding of topics, I also gain relationships with the people we invite on the sessions. This has been another learning experience for me personally, I get to brush up on my public speaking skills but also at the same time learn new things and connect with new people.
With Ibu Adhisty, as head of the Global Jaya School PTA, the PTA comprises of parents from various background and experiences which provides enriching perspectives when discussing issues or events. From my point of view, the events held so far have provided added value to myself as well as the school community.
Particular events that is memorable to me are the Teachers and Staff Appreciation Night (TSAN) 2022 and the Universal Design for Learning Workshop (UDL Workshop). TSAN 2022 is memorable since it is one of the first offline school event held after two years hiatus due to the pandemic. With great teamwork and collaborations between the PTA Committee and the school community, TSAN 2022 turned out to be a festive and awesome production. Everyone that attended had a great time, with the people enjoying the food, entertainment and the photobooth. I was delighted that I am able to take part in an event where we appreciate the teachers and staff who are very close to our children. UDL Workshop is also a significant event for me because attention to individual child development and inclusivity in education is a particular subject that is dear to my heart. I am a believer that everyone is unique and therefore there is no “one size fits all” in education and learning. The workshop has provided me the tools needed to support the children in their learning journey. I hope other participants also left the workshop with extra tools and knowledge on how to support their child’s learning journey.
Aside from experiences, I gain friendship from being in the PTA. The warm, open, and great teamwork of the PTA Committee is exceptional. The experiences and friendship that I gain, will hold a special place in my heart.
Lastly, my family and I will move to Australia in January. This Article is also my farewell to the PTA and the school. I would like to say thank you to the PTA Committee and also to the school for the amazing journey. We will miss the Global Jaya School community for its warmth, inclusivity and togetherness. But as they say once a GJS family will always be a GJS family. Thank you.
