Dear Global Jaya Secondary Community,
Now that we have completed our first month of school, I can tell you from first hand experience that it has been a busy and productive year so far. Our athletics program is off to a great start with students participating in basketball, soccer, and volleyball; our ASAs are up and running; a significant number of students took part in the Harvard Young Leaders program; we hosted parents for our WWW information session; the Global Jaya homecoming event was a great way to network with GJS alumni; and, at the same time, we have established successful routines at school to help us succeed with our academics. Overall, Global Jaya is truly a busy hub of activity–as great schools should be.
Looking towards the next few weeks, I want to draw your attention to our student goal setting process. Students in years 7-11 engage in a goal setting process based on the inquiry cycle, which looks as follows: inquiry→Action→Reflection→Inquiry→Action→Reflection etc. More importantly, the process of inquiry is at the heart of the IB curriculum, so when students take part in their own inquiry, they are fully embracing the IB experience. During the week of August 28th, students will learn more about the goal setting process and the steps they must take throughout this academic year. Additionally, the action and goal setting process not only offers students an area of focus for each subject, but this experience serves as the basis for the reflections students write for our terms 1 and 3 Managebac reports.
So that you can support your children with their own inquiry, please read through the timeline of events.
Timeline:
1 September-18 September: Students work on their DRAFT inquiry (paragraph) and action (goal) for each subject.
18 September: Students submit their DRAFT inquiry (paragraph) and action (goal) for each subject via MB or Google Doc.
18-25 September: Teachers will provide each student with feedback. This can be done via comments on their submission or as face-to-face meetings.
27 September: Deadline for students to submit their final report to teachers, 16.00.
29 September: Teachers enter reports into Managebac by 16:00
2-3 October: Advisors review/check grade level reports in Managebac
4 October: Reports are published by 16.00
5-6 October: Mid Semester Conferences (MSC)
Goal setting is not just a process for students. All teachers set goals for the year: Curriculum Leaders set goals for the departments they lead, MYP and DP Coordinators set goals for their programmes, and principals set goals for the Secondary division. All of our goals are based on student progress and will be discussed, reflected upon, and evaluated throughout the year. The same should happen with student goals. Regularly reflecting on goals and evaluating progress toward achieving them is key to this process. Parents, I encourage you to speak with your child about their process so that you can collaborate with them on achieving their goals. Collaboration is not only a key social skill, it is a necessary element of an effective education. We look forward to working together to achieve all of our goals this school year!
