For the first time, we began the very beginning of the school year with an orientation day for all Secondary students. We hoped to transition students into new classes, new programmes, a new school year …. switching gears from a holiday mindset to a ready-to-learn mindset.
After the morning advisory and the ‘Welcome to Secondary school’ assembly, each year level had their own unique programme that ensured that students had the knowledge that they needed in order to successfully navigate the school year. In constructing the schedule for the day, we also built in time for ice breaking and community building.
The highlight of the day for many was the ‘Amazing GJS Race’, an inter-year house competition that culminated in a ‘cheer-down’ in the GJS Theatre. Students from different year levels were put into groups of approximately ten. After collecting their group, they were allocated a ‘passport’ and then had to race around the school completing challenges. They had to determine the different strengths and skill sets within their group members in order to decide on which challenges they were going to tackle together. Each challenge completed resulted in a stamp in the group’s passport. Each stamp contributed housepoints for their team.
After a tiebreaker between Elang and Rajawali, the eventual winners were decided by the results of a cheer competition. The judges decided that Elang collectively had the best lungs on that day!
We look forward to even more fun house events throughout the academic year. Go Hawks!
After a three year hiatus, week without walls is back! Between the 11th - 15th September, years 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 will each have their own week without walls programme. Each of the Week Without Walls’ itineraries intends to:
To support the development of social emotional skills, learner profile attributes and ATL skills.
To build identity and enhance self-esteem.
To foster perseverance and resilience in action.
To strengthen relationships to build an inclusive community.
To provide service to a community.
We value the return of this important component of the school calendar as the experiences that the students face together, and the challenges that they will overcome, will have a transformative impact on their growth and development. The cohesion between the students in each of the year levels will also undoubtedly benefit and precious memories will be built that last a lifetime.
For your information, an overview of our Week Without Walls programme can be found here
Year 12 will stay behind and focus on their Diploma studies. Their schedule will be arranged with some year 12 classes, university presentations and support from the university counsellor. Year 12 students will also have time allocated to work on aspects of the programme, such as IAs, EE, TOK and CAS. Please contact Pak Derrick (derrick@globaljaya.com) or Pak Ram (ramp@globaljaya.com) with any questions regarding the year 12 schedule for the week 11th - 15th September.
Learning Enhancement Policy
After almost a year in the making, we are excited to launch our brand new Learning Enhancement policy for the 2023 - 24 academic year.
The policy aims to communicate the ways in which we can extend, or support the extension of, those GJS students who excel in a particular skill or competence. This includes those students who participate at a national or international level in any field as well as those students who may excel in a particular subject area offered by the school.
We have now presented the new Learning Enhancement policy to all staff, all Secondary students and to the parents who attended the meeting on the 24th August and are happy to see applications now being submitted.
Towards the end of the year we will plan to seek feedback on how effectively the learning enhancement programme supported and extended successful level three students in order to further refine our practices, before finalising the policy in preparation for the academic year 2024 - 25.
