Yesterday, we had two guest speakers talking about stories. The first speaker was Ibu Windi, our PYP Coordinator. She taught us about formulating questions. She showed us a video, and we had to ask many questions about the movie and learn open and closed questions.
The second guest speaker we had was Ibu Rose from Kenya. She came to teach at Secondary Global Jaya School for about a month now. She told us her cultural and traditional story from Kenya. We were so enthused to listen to the story. The story was about a lazy person. Because he was lazy, he faced many problems in his life.
One day, he went to the sea and tried catching a fish, but instead, he saw an ugly woman. After he caught the nasty woman, he became rich and began using drugs. None of his wives wanted him, and then he got so mad that he told the secret. So the woman walked to the sea where she was from, and miraculously, all the treasures collected followed her steps. The exciting part was that footsteps were shown on the beach without getting washed away. It was heavily guarded. We all thought it was a compelling story, and Ibu Rose said she'd be happy to come again and tell us another story.
Upacara:
We did Upacara on Friday, August 18th on the field to celebrate our Independence Day and to remember the struggle of Indonesian heroes against colonialism. During Upacara we sang the national anthem Indonesia Raya and Hari Merdeka. We also prayed to the heroes that fought for Indonesia.
Fun activities:
We did a couple of fun activities to celebrate that day. The aim of these activities was celebrating what Indonesian heroes achieved and increasing communication and collaboration. Here are some of the games we played:
Moving Island is a game where you have to get everybody on your team to the other side without touching grass using cardboard.
Fax machine is a game where you are given a shape and have to draw something on your friend's back and the last person must guess and draw the shape on paper.
Moving Sarong is a game where we have to move a sarong with your team to the last person while holding and and you cannot touch the sarong while making it to the last person.
All about Indonesia quiz: Our class did a fun, competitive game that includes teamwork about Indonesia. In this activity, students must write everything about Indonesia with alphabetical order (from A-Z) with their team.
Feeding chocolate blindfolded: For this activity the first team will be blindfolded and will have to feed the other team chocolate with only their voice to lead them. This game is not competitive so no one wins or loses.
Year 5 students are reading Indonesian folklore. The activity after reading is to retell the legend along with their comments and perspectives on the message and cultural values behind the story.
“Reading can take you places you have never been before” - Dr. Seuss
Year 5 students have been summarizing stories using a story arc and also comparing and contrasting stories in English. We have been reading original fairytales and comparing them to “Twisted Faiytales”. We will get creative and write our own soon!
On the first day of school, we all introduced ourselves and talked to other students. We all got to know each other. We did a lot of activities to introduce ourselves and get to know the teacher’s. Some examples of activities we did are guessing dates of birth, writing about others in first impressions, how to solve conflicts, sharing ideas, and much more. We were then added to a group chat for communication.
Self-Management:
We were told some of the year 5 expectations.
We can not submit any tasks late, a deadline is a deadline, but making mistakes is still part of our learning as long as we do not repeat it again. We are also expected to have self management skills, this means we will need to manage our own time and do our work on time. If your work is late there is an exception that is if your parent writes a letter/email to the teacher explaining the emergency and the reason that you haven’t turned in your work.
We are expected to be in the classroom by 7.30 am, A late mark will be added to the attendance if we enter the class after 7.40 am
ICT
GJS is Google Suite Schools. Student’s are independent to use Google Classroom, Email (using school account) ,Google Apps ,Google Sites (students’ portfolio).
If we’re going to use social media, we have to use it appropriately and responsibly and the purpose for social media in school is for communication.
We also have to bring our own device from home. If we don’t bring it we can borrow it from the ICT department.
Integrity
We must act with integrity and honesty, and take responsibility for our actions and the consequences of those actions.
