Who We Are, Who are We?
By Ayla Saaliha El Ferino 5A
In this UOI 5, our main subject is health, with the transdisciplinary theme; who we are. In this unit, we learned about our respiratory system/lungs and heart/cardiovascular system for Science, and personal goals in Civics and Social Studies.
During this period we learned about how our lungs and hearts work and even how they work together. The heart works like a train to take the blood instead of people to the lungs, Then the lungs are like a train station who receives the blood but instead gives the oxygen. This is a loop that continues on until you kick the bucket otherwise known as die.
For the Personal Goal, we learned how to improve our health in certain areas by doing things related to it that also could help. I think this unit is important to be learnt because I think it is very important to be able to manage our health and improve the areas we aren't good at.
I think that other than that, it is also important to know more about your body since if we don’t really know about our bodies it will also be hard to understand ourselves. For example, if we get hurt in our respiratory system, We might not know where we are hurt. Sometimes we can go to the doctor. But we also might need this info if we want to become a doctor, nurse, and etc
When this unit started we had a special year 5 event called rotations where all students in year 5 gather in 1 GMeet and then separate into different groups with each teacher showing different health topics then explaining what they are, how to improve them, and how they help us.
One of the UOI 5 projects is to make a personal project/goal where we focus on particular health like mental, physical, spiritual, social, and intellectual. The project works like a to-do list where we make our list related to the health we chose with optional/free format choices. Another rule is in the format; we also have to have our sub-goals or mini-goals about our primary goal. These will act like daily/weekly to-do lists like exercising, meditating, nutrition, etc. Another essential thing to do in this project is to have our questions related to our sub-goals and research them for answers. This project has personally helped me to build good and healthy habits. So I find this unit really useful for myself.
Hello my name is Gregor from Year 5 and today I will share a little bit of my experience with you about our GDP class (short for Growth Development Program) in Year 5. In GDP class we learn about our growth and changes to our bodies when we grow up.
Before the GDP class I didn’t know the changes that we are going to go through, but after the GDP lesson I know that you will smell worse when you sweat because of puberty and you will have a deeper voice.
We also got to do some quizzes and questions about changes to our body when we grow up to review our understanding. For example puberty for the boys and period for the girls.
We were taught how to prepare ourselves for puberty. For example they taught us how to make our own puberty kit, consisting of natural deodorant, nail clipper, brush or comb, hair product (gel or pomade), an extra pair of underwear and pants, razors (for shaving), shave gel, and pads.
This class was useful to me because I got to know the changes to my body that i'm going to go through and since I know the changes that my body is going to go through I can prepare for it and be ready when it comes.
