Yayyy…finally students can come to school with no odd or even group. We are so happy because we can meet our friends and teachers as a whole class (almost). We are learning how to follow the health protocols in the classroom, at the playground, at the canteen, at the soccer field and in any other areas that we are allowed to enter. Our teachers remind us about physical distancing and washing/sanitising hands after playing and eating. We show respect and care when we are at school.
We are amazed by how generous, confident and talented our Year 2 students are! Some students in 2A and 2B participated in the Student Council’s special event “Got Talent”. Freya performed a fun contemporary dance. Arlo demonstrated his Rubik’s cube skills. Byura, Izma, Sherina and Shafira did wonderful paintings. Juna and Eryn proved their swimming skills, and Nada played lovely songs on the piano. Terrific job! We are hoping that even more students can participate in the next event.
Year 2 students are learning about changes of matter under the transdisciplinary theme How the World Works. We are learning how matter changes from solid to liquid, liquid to solid, liquid to gas and gas to liquid. We also explore some related terminology such as evaporation, condensation, melting, solidification and many more. We would like to share with you some of the exciting experiments that happened in the class.
We prepared a candle, matches, a spoon and paper before starting the experiment. We also have agreed to follow the rules to be safe during the activity. At home with adult supervision, we observed how a solid changes to liquid. We applied the scientific method to do this simple experiment. We were thinkers and risk-takers while doing this experiment. Now we know that hotter temperatures can cause solids to melt.
To do this experiment, we prepared colourful chocolate, 2 plastic plates, hot water and tap water. Again, we applied the scientific method to do this fun experiment. We were responsible and became more knowledgeable after doing this experiment. We now understand how hot water and tap water have different effects on the colourful chocolate. The colouring on the chocolates on both plates dissolved but the hot water dissolved faster than the tap water. Can you see how beautiful it was when we arranged them in a special way?
This experiment was one of the best things that we did in this unit of inquiry. Before starting the experiments, we were inquirers and curious about the result. We prepared cornstarch, a plastic bowl, food colouring and some water. We mixed all the ingredients using our hands. We loved this since we used our fine motor skills and were not afraid of being messy. It is part of learning. We tried and tried until we saw the solid cornstarch change to liquid. We learned that some things can act like a liquid AND a solid.
Year 2 students commemorate and celebrate Kartini Day on Thursday, 21st April 2022.
Ibu Kartini inspired them to get a good education and learn hard to reach their dreams. They enjoyed the activities held during the day. They colored batik and also made a bookmark.
