Bachelor’s Degree Program offered by the Department of ELT fosters quality educators who can contribute to the ever-challenging society with special knowledge and skills of English language and cultures. The Department of ELT also aims to foster educators who posses not only basic educational knowledge and skills but also a rich sense of humanity and ripe judgment as educators. The ELT majors are actively involved in English education through volunteer work in local elementary and secondary schools as well as through studying at home and abroad. All faculty members and staffs fully support the students who obtain English education.
Small class sizes
Only about sixteen students are at the Department of ELT each year, which is an ideal learning condition, giving students more opportunities to learn closely from the instructors and classmates. Because of a small class size, the ELT majors are connected strongly with each other, and they support and stimulate each other more compared to other majors.
Volunteer works
The students in the Department of ELT participate in various extramural activities as volunteers. With or without the mediation by the board of education in Mito city, a number of public schools request ELT majors to participate in classrooms as volunteer teaching assistants.
Studying abroad
Many ELT majors study abroad. Ibaraki University establishes a study-abroad system through partnerships with schools from both English-speaking countries and non-English-speaking countries, and many go to those schools every year to study as part of school courses. ELT majors are enthusiastic about studying abroad.
Our university offers at least four ways to study abroad: (1) exchange programs, (2) studying abroad at students’ own expense, (3) short-period language-training courses, and (4) others. Many ELT majors join (3) the two-week intensive English course during their spring break. This is held in Eastern Washington University (USA).
Main features of the course are:
Participants use university’s dormitory.
Participants can sit in university courses of their majors and interests.
Participants can earn credits for part of their liberal arts requirements.
The program includes a short excursion to San Francisco and LA.
The Master’s Degree Program aims to cultivate quality educators with expert skills and knowledge necessary for researchers and teachers. This is done through a great deal of research and practices in studies on English language education, American and British literature, and English linguistics and cross-cultural understanding.
In addition to theoretical and practical studies conducted in classrooms, the ELT majors learn by observing real classes in local schools and supporting children.
Since the ELT department accepts in-service teachers every year, their voices are reflected in the program in which the faculty members and both pre- and in-service teachers passionately seek ideal education.
