Monthly Cultural Ceremonies

Every month, a different grade level is charged with developing the performance/presentation that will feature the Spanish- speaking country of the month for the school cultural assembly.

During the month, in individual music classes, all Maxwell students learn traditional songs from the specific country of focus. The entire school then sings the song during the monthly cultural ceremony.

Spanish Speaker of the Month

Every month, classrooms teachers choose a "Spanish Speaker of the Month" from the classroom to be recognized in the monthly assembly. These students demonstrate a commitment to maintaining the use of the Spanish language in and out of the classroom.

Spain

Fourth grade students represented "Un viaje a España" combining drama, video presentations, and music. The trip included details about Granada, Valencia, Madrid, Valladolid and Santiago de Compostela, cities of origin of our teachers from Spain. The videos included international connections to those cities and students were exposed to places like "El mercado de Abastos" de Santiago, "La Plaza Mayor" de Valladolid, "La Alhambra" de Granada, "La Ciudad de la Artes y las Ciencias" de Valencia, and "La plaza de la Ópera" de Madrid.

Puerto Rico

With fifth grade we traveled to Puerto Rico. Divided in small groups, the students prepared short presentations about places, food, sports, and animals of the island nation. The presentation ended with the whole school singing the song "El Coquí" to honor the special frog from the island of enchantment .

Ecuador

Our next stop was the Galapagos Islands in Ecuador in the "El autobús Mágico". After an introductory video about the country. The students recreated an episode of the popular TV Show the Magic School Bus where they visited the Galapagos. Iguanas, the blue-footed booby, giant turtles, etc, told us interesting facts about this unique ecosystem.

Cuba

Let´s dance in Cuba! Taking us to the Caribbean island, students from the first grade show us how to dance salsa.

Costa Rica

Third grade students dance traditional dances from Costa Rica and song "El cabaillito nicoyano".
