Morning Announcements

The Maxwell day starts at 7:45 a.m. The morning begins with a Spanish song that is played over the intercom for the entire school to enjoy. A group of students then greets everyone in Spanish through the morning announcements. Morning announcements include information about the date, weather, school birthdays, and facts about Spanish-speaking countries. A different grade level, from kindergarten to fifth, is responsible each week to lead the announcements and start our exciting day!

Students at Maxwell start instruction using the calendar. The teacher guides students through chants as they learn classroom routines and identify the current day of the week. The teacher also uses the calendar to conduct math as students count days and identify patterns.

Students start reading in Spanish at the kindergarten level. They begin working with simple sentences that focus on familiar contexts.

They utilize authentic resources, realia, and books of interest, including those that follow the Total Physical Response Storytelling (TPRS) methodology, in order to improve their overall fluency. Students are placed in small groups according to their reading level and use cooperative learning structures to improve their comprehension.

Students at Maxwell learn math in Spanish. They begin in kindergarten with basic skills that include counting by ones and tens. Math skills meet national standards and correspond to the school's math program.

Spanish culture is integrated into all aspects of the school. The county of the month determines the major cultural content that we teach our students. During the month dedicated to Colombia, in addition to general facts about the country, primary students learned to dance Cumbia: "Colombia tierra Querida".

In fourth grade, students prepare an informational folder for each country of study. At the end of the month, they visit the rest of the classes in the school in order to orally communicate the information to other students.
