As part of our mission Maxwell is committed to foster global citizenship. The devastation from the October 2017 earthquakes in Mexico impacted faculty and students of our school community. Sra. Haggard’s (kindergarten teacher) family felt the earthquakes in Pachuca and Sra. Alquicira’s (5th grade teacher) family both felt and witnessed damage to a number of the houses in their neighborhood in Mexico City.

As a school, we studied Mexico that month. We wanted to give our students the opportunity to demonstrate an act of global kindness by helping children their age in Mexico. Starting Wednesday, September 27th through October 4th, Maxwell collected donations for our Ayuda a Mexico drive. At the time of the collection, a relief package, containing basic toiletries, could be purchased for 50 pesos, or $3. Students were asked to contribute whatever they could to the drive through their own initiative.

Haggard’s family, who had connected with a national relief organization that distributed the packets in Oaxaca, Mexico. The relief packages were designed to provide basic sanitary needs while the city began to rebuild, a process that was estimated to take at least three months. Sra. Haggard’s family was able to provide updates on the packages and the rebuilding process as well.
