Curling is a team sport in which two teams, composed by a different number of players due to the different games’ modality, take turns sliding granite rocks, called “stone” across the curling field called “ice curling sheet” towards the house, a circular target on the ice which has two different colors and three concentric rings.
Each team has eight throws for each time break, also called “end” in which every player throws two rocks. The stones which get closer to the centre of the house, give one point to the team who threw it. Also, the team get more points if other stones are closer than the other teams one.
The member of the team who haven’t done the shot can help the throw of their teammate using brooms on the ice curling sheet to decrease the friction that does not allow the stone to slide properly and in the most efficient way.
An example of game modality is the mixed double curling, every team is composed by two players of two different genders, these games are quicker and with smaller teams, which provide an opportunity to partecipate for more countries in international competitions.
Two Italian players have done an impressive perfomance during the Winter Olympic Games of Beijing 2022, Stefania Constantini and Amos Mosaner won the final of mixed double curling against Norway with a comeback which seemed impossibile, but they still did it gaining the gold medal.
Strategy and team affinity are the two main abilities that players have to focus on if they want to succeed and because of this Curling is also called “Chess on ice”.
