Sophie EUPHROSINE - Management assistant
Erasmus+ staff mobility program to Escuela de Arte de Oviedo (Spain) May 2025
"I wanted my first Erasmus+ mobility programme to be in Spain because I felt more at ease with knowing a second foreign language, in addition to English.
The Oviedo Art school was the kind of establishment I wanted to discover, with its own building in spite of being located in the center of a university campus. On the advice of the host institution, I found accommodation in the heart of the “old” town, so that I could have an easier time visiting and fully enjoying the culture around me.
Upon my arrival, I was given a complete visit of the school, punctuated by meetings with several members of the administration and teaching staff. Throughout the week, I discovered the various administrative functions (curriculum management, enrollment and graduation formalities, archives…) and even had the honor of attending a graduation ceremony at the school.
Outside of classes, my week was filled with visits at the Museum of Fine Art, the Museum of Archaeology, the African Film Festival, many stroll around the city to discover gardens and parks, pre-Romanesque churches or the Oviedo Cathedral and the numerous sculptures adorning the streets. Thanks to the city’s large amount of restaurants and city bars, I was able to taste savory and sweet Asturian specialties.
Luise HOGG - Hochschule für bildende Künste Hamburg (Hamburg, Germany)
Erasmus+ study mobility program 2024-25 at ESA Réunion
"My name is Luise and I am a student at HFBK in Hamburg, Germany. During the 2e semester 2024-25, I spent an Erasmus+ semester at ESA Réunion and I will now give you an overview of my experience in the following lines.
Overall, I am extremely grateful for the opportunity of doing an Erasmus+ semester. I was made at home in Réunion Island, because I was able to get in touch with other Erasmus students in advance. In general, you quickly get to know everyone at school and there is always someone to talk to. Even though my French is far from perfect, many people were patient in order to understand me. The curriculum is slightly more academic than at my University in Hamburg, which did not bother me too much during this semester. However, I believe that more freedom would give way to more open-mindedness in the arts.
I am a huge fan of the Island! Before my mobility program, I had never heard of Réunion Island, but during the last few months, I have learned a lot about the Island’s history and discovered its magnificent nature. On that note, I must say that it is practically mandatory to have a car in order to get around the Island independently. Because the buses for which we get a free ticket are often an adventure in themselves!
I noticed that as they notice that I am not from Réunion Island, Reunionese people are very intrigued. This has led to many wonderful encounters.
Personally, I would not want to miss out on this experience and I highly recommend it!"
Esteban EVELETTE - School of Arts of the City of Liège (Liège, Belgium)
Erasmus+ study mobility program 2024-25 at ESA Réunion
"Life in Réunion Island is incredibly simple and enjoyable. You always feel like you are on vacation, due to the sun, the nice weather and the beach constantly in the background. This atmosphere provides a constant feeling of well-being.
I made lots of friends here. Reunionese people, as well as all of the people on the Island, are really kind and open minded. Their warm welcome made this Island feel like a true land of hospitality.
That being said, life here is slightly more expensive than at home [Belgium]. Groceries, as well as most produce in general, are pricier due to certain taxes.
I was lucky enough to end up with a wonderful family of musicians. They introduced me to a world of a rich and fascinating universe, allowing me to discover local artists, historical sites and unique traditions. Each week-end, I spent hours with them listening to their stories, their daily lives, eating their fruit harvest, and their amazing cuisine. Thanks to them, I discovered Réunion island from a unique perspective that I would have never imagined.
I also recently went trail running, this experience allowed me to go beyond my limits. Everyday I explored, enjoyed and savored life here to its fullest. If I had to sum up my experience in a few words I would say that every moment here is magnificent and majestic.
The landscapes are incredibly diverse : from beaches to mountains, from tropical heat to freezing cold of the “Piton des Neiges”, from luxurious primary forest to dry savannah. This Island is a genuine living painting, each corner brimming with wonders.
This Erasmus experience will forever be engraved in my memory.“
Noémi CHOTARD (4th year)
Erasmus+ study mobility program 2024-25 at the Polytechnic University of Valencia (Spain)
"Beyond paellas, empanadas, and sangrias, Valencia is a splendid city, rich in cultural and artistic heritage. The huge university campus, made a big impression on me. As soon as we arrived we were greeted by our Buddy, who showed us the city during the first week. The architecture of Valence particularly fascinated me, especially its mix of such different styles. From the futuristic style of the City of Arts and Science to the central market whose old-fashion and refined style is influenced by Art Nouveau.
Many Erasmus students come here to do their exchange program, giving way to many events dedicated to them. In the beginning, I was a bit worried about the language barrier, but I quickly realized that communication would not be a real problem. Even our awkward exchanges often led to moments of camaraderie and laughter.
One of the most memorable moments of my stay was the DANA storm, which disrupted our daily lives and forced us to switch to remote working. Even though this event was dramatic, it was also an opportunity to strengthen solidarity among students.
I am delighted to have been able to spend some time in such a beautiful city, surrounded by amazing people.”
Camille BONTEMPS (2nd year) - Saint-Luc School of Arts (Liège, Belgium)
Erasmus+ study mobility program 2023-24 at ESA Réunion
"My Erasmus+ mobility program in Réunion Island literally blew me away, in a good way. Prior to being here, I would have never been able to imagine even a quarter of what I was about to experience. Réunion Island helped me grow up and open up to new experiences. It led me to a path of learning and discoveries on myself and others. A powerful and heartwarming energy, which turns your heart upside down, turns one's life around. I believe that it happened for a reason, at the best time of my life.
At school, I was able to practice new things, and challenge myself. There were many moments of doubt, but also pride. I also met some wonderful people there. People who helped me and allowed me to grow. People with whom I laughed and shared beautiful life moments .
I am so grateful to have had this experience. Time flew by too quickly, but the memories will stay with me forever. My heart will always be here. Thank you so much for everything!
Manon DOMINIQUE (2nd year) - Saint-Luc School of Arts (Liège, Belgium)
Erasmus+ study mobility program 2023-24 at ESA Réunion
"I encourage all students who are hesitating to go abroad on an Erasmus+ program to take the plunge!
I have been in Réunion Island for four months now, and the more time passes, the more I realise how difficult it will be to leave this Island. Everytime I see a beautiful landscape I appreciate how lucky I am to be here and it moves me. But it goes much further than that : I love réunnionese culture and the people know how to make you feel welcome. I also learnt how to dance the maloya, to appreciate mountain hiking even more and I have met some extraordinary people. It is not easy to summarise my Erasmus experience, as the things that I am experiencing are rich and intense.
As an illustration student, each discovery is a source of inspiration and is worthy of being recorded in my travel sketchbook.
Concerning the school, I quickly got the hang of things thanks to the professors’ attentiveness and the students’ genuine kindness. In class, mutual aid and sharing are the norm and the school’s structure allowed me to flourish when I created. Indeed, the workshops available and the staff took great care of us.
There is no doubt that Réunion Island will help my work and artistic approach evolve!”
Quentin RATO (4th year)
Erasmus+ study mobility program 2023-24 at Hochschule für bildende Künste Hamburg (Hamburg, Germany)
"My Erasmus+ experience could not be summarized in a few lines, as it has been so decisive in my personal development and, by extension, my artistic development.
Germany has a very different school system than ours, and even if at first it seemed complicated, I quickly realized what an opportunity it was for me to leave school behind and to get back with what had drawn me to this field in the first place. Germans are very friendly, they are obviously less outgoing than French people, a bit more reserved in their interactions. But this difference opens up another social dimension, which is sometimes more authentic, albeit brief. I mainly made friends with people from other countries. Hamburg being a cosmopolitan city, it is easy for Erasmus students to meet new people who come from different regions. Personally, I would not change this experience for anything in the world. Obviously what you experience is an extension of what happens inside, but I can assure those who put their heart into what they do that a return trip is guaranteed.
Reunion Island could be found in every tree that I saw, and Hamburg's luxurious vegetation, vast parks and gardens, never ceasing to comfort me.
Transport there is completely different from our ways of travelling in our Island. Subways allow us to travel across the entire city easily and cleanly! So many things made me question my relationship with territory, time, and space.
Although it sounds like a cliché, I am extremely grateful for this enriching and unique experience which I certainly would not have been able to live without ESA’s Erasmus+ program.
Camille BRUNET (4th year)
Erasmus+ study mobility 2023-24 at ESA Le 75 (Brussels, Belgium)
"We are nearing the end of this Erasmus year at the 75 in Brussels, I have never, in all of my scholarly years, been this productive. The course layout, the professors/ technicians as well as the highly functional workshops in screen printing, engraving, and bookbinding have allowed me to improve my production beyond my expectations. In the end I became self-reliable with the material and the workshops which are available in free access to students. The ink and tools are provided by the school but you need to buy the sheets, printing stencils, and linoleum and zinc plates, etc.
As for the city of Brussels in itself, it’s a big city with all that entails. The landlords fully indulge themselves with the rent prices and life is expensive in addition to being fast-paced. I missed the laid back atmosphere of Réunion Island. Nonetheless, it is easy to get around the city which makes it possible to find interesting jobs. The city is extremely rich culturally, it’s party time all the time, the cinematographic scene is amazing, as is the queer scene. In general, the underground scene is strong here. I've started a nice collection of zines and other micro-publications, I’ve seen lots of punk concerts, and I’ve gone to meet artists and visit squats. I’ve also visited or revisited a few cities in neighboring countries.
Ultimately, what I retain from the 75 is the joy and confidence of working in full autonomy, I was able to start selling my productions at small markets or during school events. I made some friends and I learnt a lot, I am grateful for everything!
Claire LE LAY (4th year)
Erasmus+ study mobility 2023-24 at Athens School of Fine Arts (Athens, Greece)
"If I had to choose, I would pick Athens twice over and if I could extend my stay I would.
Reasons: the school, which is quite fantastique, an old factory recycled into an art school, huge workshops, a wide range of subjects, and highly competent teachers in each field. The rhythm is very different from what I am accustomed to, we work a lot, as much as we do in Réunion Island but with a different schedule. The Greek students are rather nice, and the fact that I come from Réunion Island (they didn’t know where it was, but once Madagascar is mentioned it’s fine) they happily chatted with me. Many have learnt French in school or were currently studying it so they could go on Erasmus+ next year.
Life there : once you have figured out the subway, bus, walking and Google Maps, Athens is a fascinating city. There are an amazing number of things to see and do, personally I love archeology and mythology and I spend a lot of time in the “agoras” or ancient markets, near the Acropolis or elsewhere to visit and set down to paint. Despite the fact that Athens is a big city, life here is very pleasant. But beware, it gets quite cold in February.
To sum up, living in Athens is really great and I am having a wonderful Erasmus+ here.”
Siobhán MCCARTER FLYNN (2nd year) - Munster Technological University (Cork, Ireland)
Erasmus+ study mobility program 2023-24 at ESA Réunion
"Immersing yourself in a culture very different from your own in an incredible journey to undertake. Having lived in Ireland my whole life, I longed for a change that would leave a lasting impression on me. Réunion Island, in many ways, resonates with the warmth and depth of Irish culture. Its lively community, its diverse perspectives and rich blend of traditions create an unforgettable experience.
At first, the mix of French and Creole intimidated me, but the kindness and support from the inhabitants to help me learn their beautiful language quickly made me feel at ease. Le Port, with its cultural diversity and abundance of artistic opportunities, felt like a welcoming embrace, making me feel at home from the beginning. The support and enthusiasm of the school toward my ideas and creative endeavour reinforced once again my connection to this unique place.
Each morning, waking up surrounded by the breathtaking beauty of this paradise is a gift, but it’s the warmth and sincere kindness from the locals that really moved me and made me want to stay.”
Loona HOUNG ON SEING (4th year)
Erasmus+ study mobility program 2023-24 at the Polytechnic University of Valencia (Spain)
“This Erasmus+ experience has been a real springboard for my personal and artistic development. Going away on your own can be scary for many people, the first months of adaptation are hard but this experience was by far the best thing that had happened to me in order to embark on my life as a young adult.
Valencia is an ideal destination for an Erasmus+ student especially for those from Réunion Island, the palm trees, the beach, the food, the language and the rolled R’s… Not to mention the cost of life. Spain has its advantages : the rents, groceries, the Mercat Central, the free activities — it has everything.
Erasmus+ is an opportunity to meet wonderful people in both the artistic and social sphere. I managed to take part in expositions and openings that brought together artists from all over the world!
I’m leaving with new friends and wonderful travel memories, because yes, it’s true that traveling is more accessible from France… (special mention for Morocco). I’m glad I stayed there for a year and not just 6 months because I would have missed out on so many opportunities!"
Felix Mateo BRUNNABEND (4th year) - Hochschule für bildende Künste Hamburg (Hamburg, Germany)
Erasmus+ study mobility program 2023-24 at ESA Réunion
« After a little over two months in Réunion Island, I can say that I have settled in and that I am feeling good.
In the beginning, I had clearly underestimated the language barrier and I could not understand everything, but the teachers and students were very helpful and considerate. The structure of the school was very different from what I am used to in Germany, much closer and smaller. We learn a lot of things and the fourth year classes are really interesting.
What I like the most is the nature and landscapes of the Island! So I am very happy to have made some good friends with whom I can discover the Island.»
Héloïse THIBURCE (4th year)
Erasmus+ study mobility program 2022-23 at Fondation H, Antananarivo (Madagascar)
"From July to September, I had the opportunity to continue my research on plant fibers at the Fondation H (Tana, Madagascar). The team that I joined was extremely kind ; and I greatly thank them for their precious help throughout my stay. Thanks to them I was able to discover the contemporary Malagasy art scene through expositions, openings, meetings with artists, and studio visits. This stay was incredibly stimulating, and I was constantly jotting down new ideas for creations. The Fondation H also gave me the opportunity to discuss my work with the public during a meeting on Saturday 26 August.
I thank the ERASMUS + program and all of the people who helped me realise this experience. Also a big thank you to Caroline for her support. I never felt alone during this experience, I always felt safe, which was very important given the situation. This experience will stay with me forever!”
Thomas NAYAGOM (4th year)
Erasmus+ study mobility program 2022-23 at Hochschule für bildende Künste Hamburg (Allemagne)
"This Erasmus+ mobility offers many possibilities. The hospitality was pleasant, some of the classes were taught in English or German. It was a bit challenging at first to get used to the climate, but you get used to it. The locals were welcoming and the school hosts several international students.
I met a lot of new people who spoke several languages. It’s also really interesting to see other ways of doing things. The school offers a catalogue of flexible courses in addition to the possibility to specialise in certain subjects. Everyday life is made easier by the public transports such as trains, buses, which often run continuously.
I highly recommend a Erasmus+ mobility to future students, I believe that it’s good to try out different schools and living situations every now and then. It enriches your experience and gives you a new perspective on what you have and how you view other places.”
Maria ESTEVE TRULL (4th year) – Universitat Politècnica de València (Valencia, Spain)
Erasmus+ study mobility program 2023-24 at ESA Réunion
« In February 2023, I arrived in Réunion Island with no idea of what the Island could look like. On my way here, I met people who helped me understand a portion of their roots, history, culture, costumes, language and music.
Doing an academic exchange in a place is very enriching, both artistically and personally. The territory fully preserves its natural spaces and places steeped in power and beliefs. In every corner, an installation emerges naturally. I identify with the landscape and am beginning to connect with the place.
I hope to return with my head full of memories and the feeling of being part of this wonderful Island.”
Ketty DAMOUR (4th year)
Erasmus+ study mobility program 2023-24 at Accademia dei belle arti di Palermo (Italia)
« I had the opportunity to study in Sicily, Italy through the Erasmus+ exchange program at this beautiful academy of fine arts located in Palermo. I was immersed in a culture and traditions that I had always wanted to see and learn about. The beauty of the narrow streets and the clothes drying on balconies and windowsills, the beauty of the countryside, the warm company of the older residents, the architecture and the different styles of decoration in Sicilian houses will leave me with a feeling of attachment. I live in the heart of the historic center of Ballarò. I remain fascinated by all the churches and magnificent cathedrals. I’ve met some really nice people during the classes, from Poland, France, Russia, Spain, and of course Italy.
I chose lithography, linocut, and two photography classes. You have to buy your own materials, such as printing sheets, linoleum plates, and zinc plates. The ink and all the tools are provided by the school.
The Italian language is easy to understand, and I write all my messages in Italian to communicate with other Italians and memorize as many words as possible. I actually chat with them in English and then a little in Italian. Italian drivers don’t always respect right of way, and even less so for pedestrians. Unfortunately, this is generally the case here.
I recommend everyone to take part in an Erasmus+ mobility program. It helped me to see further, to develop my capacity to move, bounce back and rediscover.”
Jérémy THEYS (2nd year) – École supérieure des Arts Saint-Luc (Liège, Belgium)
Erasmus+ study mobility program 2022-23 at ESA Réunion
"Firstly, the school has set up a buddy system for Erasmus students. Let me introduce you to my Buddy : Léo (Marie)! She became one of the people I get on the best with here! She gave me a warm welcome and we still have lots of fun together.
In Liège, I only do photography. If you are interested in trying different mediums, go to ESA Réunion. I’m experimenting with lots of things and the teachers don’t put any pressure on me. They know that I have never painted, or drawn before, but everything is going well. It feels good to try new things!
The school has also allowed me to participate in public events. My performance teacher organized a performance party on May, 12 2023 at la Friche in Le Port. I signed up and performed in front of a public audience. It’s an amazing experience as an Erasmus student to participate in the artistic and cultural life of the Island!
Of course, I have to tell you about the Island in itself. It’s so different, so beautiful, the sun is often present, it’s hot. It’s really nice to live there. Moreover there are a multitude of different landscapes due to the Island’s microclimates. Mountains, beaches, foggy plains, wide open spaces, volcanoes, basins. The only slight downside is that with a tropical climate, you need to coexist with our animal friends. Nothing too bad, but I had a few scares!
And of course, the reason why this experience is truly incredible is that Léo, my buddy, introduced me to his friends. I’ve become to them, they make me live incredible experiences. It’s going to be hard to say goodbye to them, but I am sure that one day I will come back to Réunion Island. I feel at home there, which no other place has ever made me feel before!”
Leÿs JOUSSOT (2nd year) – École supérieure des Arts Saint-Luc (Liège, Belgium)
Erasmus+ study mobility program 2022-23 at ESA Réunion
"Hello!
Being an introvert, I was afraid that I would have trouble fitting in, even though I am French-speaking and therefore had no language barrier. But luckily some of the people with whom I was going to spend the semester with quickly approached me.
I was able to visit a bit of the Island beside classes, by going to Kélonia to observe the turtles or by hiking for example.
As for the classes themselves, it was slightly difficult to keep up because they were very different from my usual curriculum, but in the end I was able to catch up and progress more than I thought.
Obviously I recommend doing an Erasmus+ mobility to other students. It’s a great experience to change your routine so much at once, you meet great people, and you also learn about yourself!”
Florence DIJOUX (4th year)
Erasmus+ study mobility program 2022-23 at École supérieure des Arts Saint-Luc (Liège, Belgium)
"The city of Liège is lively, to say the least. With its large student population, you'll have no trouble meeting genuinely friendly people. Party and beer lovers are in the right place! The more adventurous might also want to try baptism (don't be surprised to see some not-so-white smocks in the streets). But you'll still have to navigate the city traffic, which is undergoing major changes due to the construction of a tram line...
ESA Saint-Luc is home to various art departments as well as an architecture department (not really surprising in this regard). The painting department, for example, encourages the development of personal research during the many hours dedicated to studio work. The opportunity to have a cafeteria serving quality meals at low cost is a serious advantage, with Liège waffles and Belgian fries within easy reach.
Both the teachers and the staff make this a school where you feel welcome.
Apart from that, it is quite easy to visit other interesting cities in the country, such as Brussels or Antwerp, by train, but be careful to speak English in Flanders! Similarly, Liège's proximity to the Dutch border is a major asset, as it offers the opportunity to discover a second country, which is very different from Belgium. Maastricht, Amsterdam, and The Hague are never far away."
Cora DURMANN (4th year) – Hochschule für bildende Künste Hamburg (Hamburg, Germany)
Erasmus+ study mobility program 2022-23 at ESA Réunion
"After an adaptation period to a different culture and way of life, I am happy to be here. It is emotionally difficult to come alone, but it has not been difficult to make friends.
I have spent a lot of time in nature, which is very impressive and diverse. The school focuses on issues related to landscape, history, and complex Creole identity.
This Erasmus+ mobility program offers great prospects, even though the Island is small.”
Jonathan POTANA (4th year)
Erasmus+ study mobility program 2021-22 at Universitat Politècnica de València - UPV (Spain)
"I found my first words in sculpture, and since then I have never stopped exploring this branch of the humanities and social sciences. The question I ask is: What is man? Where is he going? My artistic practice takes reality as its material, in all its complexity and poetic diversity, in order to be in ‘inter-retroaction’ with it. [...]
If I had one piece of advice for those who want to get started, it would be that it is through plurality that we aim for unity. It is by connecting and breaking down the barriers between fields that we can dare to want to see the world. Art is no longer enough. [...]
When I get back, I'm going to try to rest before getting into the rhythm of my final year of my Master's degree. As we say: “Fé pa la bou avan la pli” (Don't rush things). I plan to continue working in the field of culture, broaden my horizons, and share the fruits of my research with as many people as possible. "

Erasmus+ study mobility program 2021-22 at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna (Austria)
"Currently on an Erasmus exchange in Vienna, I am taking advantage of all the opportunities offered by this green and lively city. Many parks and the nearby Vienna Woods with its hiking trails, which are very popular on weekends, are easily accessible by bike or public transport. After a good walk, what could be better than stopping at a pastry shop to enjoy a Sachertorte (a chocolate and apricot jam specialty), or going down to the banks of the Danube for a picnic, not forgetting to stop for a glass of wine at a Heurigen, a small hut in the vineyards where you can taste the wines produced on site. In winter, the trails are still accessible when it snows, so all you need is a good pair of boots to discover other landscapes.
As for the university, several buildings in different parts of the city serve as workshops accessible to students. Mine is located on Schillerplatz, in the historic building of the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts. Everything has been recently renovated and Schillerplatz reopened in the fall of 2021. The library, with its century-old books, staircases, and decorated ceilings, is a marvel that I am privileged to see every day on my way to the workshop.”

"Here is my first Iberian ceramic piece made in class! The paintings are also in the Iberian style, although I have modernized the placement of the shapes a little. Iberian shapes are simple, often repetitions of lines, circles, and spirals.
The themes are more symbolic, focusing on gods and animals, for example.
The other two photos were taken during our visit to the #MARQ. Museo Arqueológico"

Erasmus+ study mobility program 2021-22 at Escuela Superior de Diseño Grafico Alicante (Spain)
" I chose to spend my Erasmus+ mobility at the Escuela Superior de Diseño Grafico Alicante in Spain. It's a very sunny and lively city. There is so much to discover and visit!
There are different courses available at the school: graphic design, interior design, fashion design, and object design. I chose the graphic design course. Compared to the École Supérieure d'Art de La Réunion, it is a very technical and still very academic school.
We learn various techniques, mainly drawing, photography, and printing and bookbinding techniques. But there are also more theoretical courses such as graphic design culture. We have the opportunity to take additional options related to design in general."
