Review of Steps (Photoshop):
- Duplicate your background layer (Ctrl-J)
Blemish removal:
- Use the Spot Healing Brush tool (J) to remove small blemishes. Ensure your brush is just a bit bigger than the blemish.
- If the surrounding skin is not what you want to change it to, use the Healing Brush tool (same menu) and sample a different point (by ALT-clicking) before changing the desired area.
Removing redness:
- Add a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer
- Click on the little finger button in the Hue/Saturation adjustment menu
- In the top-left of your screen, select "5x5 sample" rather than point sample.
- Click on an area of skin that is too red. The Hue/Saturation adjustment should automatically select the Red channel.
- Change the hue to the far left (it's going to look horrible; don't worry).
- Use the colour range sliders (under the hue/saturation/lightness to fine-tune the colour range so just the parts you want to change are selected. Don't forget to set the transitions so they "feather" a bit.
- Change your hue back to 0, then gently move the slider to the right a little until the redness blends in with the rest of the pixels.
- If necessary, you can very slightly bring down the saturation as well.
- If the lips or other unwanted areas have changed, click on the mask of the Hue/Saturation adjustment layer, then select a black brush and mask those areas out so they revert to their original state.
Smoothening skin:
- Duplicate the layer you used for blemish retouching (Ctrl-J). A new layer should appear above.
- On that layer, invert it (Ctrl-I). It will NOT look good. That's OK.
- Change the blend mode of that layer to Vivid Light.
- Filter > Other > High Pass. Set the number to around 9 (look at the tutorial; with your own image you're trying to imitate the amount of blur as you see in the tutorial).
- Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur. Set the number to around 3 (will be different for your own image).
- Create a mask on the layer, invert it (Ctrl-I), then use a white brush to paint in the areas you want to be smoothed out.
2) PROJECT: PORTRAIT RE-TOUCHING
Your job in this project is to download the sample image (link above) and do what you can in Photoshop to give the subject's skin a clear, clean look that is free of blemishes, but that still looks realistic.
You will then do the same with another image, either from the Internet (be sure to search for high-resolution images) or from your own collection. Choose a face that actually "needs" the touch-ups.
Sometimes searching for "no makeup face" or some version of that might help.
Refer to the tutorial videos above for tips on which tools work best.
You need to:
- remove blemishes
- reduce redness in skin if needed
- whiten teeth if needed
- smooth out the skin texture to reduce the sight of pores, wrinkles, etc.
You should not remove freckles, moles, etc., as these are a natural part of your subject's identity.
TO HAND IN:
1) Complete Photoshop work on both images (tutorial and your own).
2) Save your changed images as .jpgs BUT GIVE THEM DIFFERENT NAMES so they don't overwrite the "before" images.
3) Post your before & after images on CLASSROOM.
