1) PROJECT: TEXT EFFECTS
2) USING TEXT IN PHOTOSHOP (WITH VIDEO TUTORIALS)
DO NOW: Right now, think of NINE WORDS that you feel describe you (stay positive, please). Write these down using a Google Doc, NotePad, or on a piece of paper. You'll need to have ten words in mind before you start today's project.
For this Photoshop assignment, you will explore the many ways to manipulate text in a project.
Skills learned:
- How to create layers
- How to fill layers with a colour or gradient
- How to use the Type tool
- How to adjust size and alignment of text
- How to use the Warped Text tool
- How to use Layer Styles to add dimension to your text
1) PROJECT: TEXT EFFECTS
1) Write a list of nine words that you feel best describe you.
2) Open Photoshop, click on the Create New button (or go to File > New, and select Default Photoshop Size.
3) Use the Type tool to enter each word on a separate layer. (Choose a font for each word that you feel is a proper match). Include your name, for a total of TEN WORDS.
4) Once each word is entered, go back and adjust the size, colour, placement, orientation (can use the vertical type tool too) so the whole document has a sense of cohesion.
5) Go back again and use the warped text tool on at least 2 of the words.
6) Go back once more and add a layer style (e.g. Drop Shadow, Outer Glow, Bevel/Emboss) to all 10 of the words.
7) Change your background to a gradient (you can choose the colours or whether it's a linear or radial gradient).
8) When finished, go to File > Save, and save your image as a .psd file (the default). This is so you can go back and edit your project later if you need. Save the file to your Photo 10\COM1005 Visual Composition folder.
9) Now select File > Save a Copy, and this time save your image as a .jpg. THIS IS THE ONE YOU WILL HAND IN.
10) Open this assignment in Classroom.
14) Click ADD, then FILE, then UPLOAD, and select your .jpg image to upload it to Classroom.
15) Complete the attached self-evaluation rubric.
16) click TURN IN.

Written steps (Older version, use at your own risk!)
How to use the Type tool:
- Click on the Type tool icon on the left toolbar or press the keyboard shortcut "T". When you click somewhere on your project, a new text layer is automatically created.
- Use the tools in the top toolbar to adjust font, size, colour, etc.
How to create vertical text:
- Click and hold the Type tool icon and select "Vertical Type Tool".
How to adjust size and alignment of text, rotate, etc.:
- To re-size or rotate text, select the correct layer, then press CTRL+T to activate the Free Transform command. You could also go to Edit > Free Transform to do the same thing.
- In Free Transform mode, you can re-size text (or any selection, for that matter) by clicking and dragging on one of the corner selection boxes.
- While in Free Transform mode, you can also rotate text by clicking just outside the box (your cursor will turn to a curvy arrow)
- You can press ESC to get out of Free Transform mode without saving changes. If you wish to keep your changes, press ENTER.
How to use the Warped Text tool:
- To create cool arc or other shape effects with your text, enter your text using the Type tool, then highlight it and Click on the Warped Text button in your top toolbar. This will open a menu with many options that can all be customized in a number of ways. Play around!
How to use Layer Styles (AKA Blending Options) to add dimension to your text
One of the best ways to make text "pop" is to add a Layer Style such as Drop Shadow, Bevel/Emboss, or Outer Glow.
- To Add a Layer Style, select the layer you wish to modify, then look at the very bottom-right of your window and click on the fx button. "Fx" sounds like "effects", right?
- To specify which style to add, you want to click on the name of the effect, not on the box beside it. This is very counter-intuitive, but if you just click the box Photoshop will add a pre-made version of the effect and not let you customize it. Clicking on the name of the effect will open different options that let you customize the effect.
You want to customize the effect
- To make an effect more prominent, consider raising the opacity. To make an effect more "fuzzy", try raising the size but keeping the stroke low. For a more "firm" effect, do the opposite.
