4038 Professional Growth Board Policy
Every six years, permanent certificated employees shall give evidence of professional
growth. Six semester hours of college credit shall be accepted as evidence of
professional growth.
The board of education believes the goal of professional self-improvement to be
inherent in the responsibilities of each certificated district employee.
Employees who have achieved permanent status and whose positions with the school
district require State Board of Education certification shall show evidence of
professional growth by obtaining not fewer than six semester hours of credit from a
college or university every six years. In the alternative, such other activities as are
approved by the Board, which may include, but not be limited to, educational travel,
writing for professional publications or work on educational committees. The
superintendent is charged with drafting the rules and regulations for such arrangements.
A Professional Growth Committee will be established to review professional
development activities. This committee will consist of the superintendent, principal,
guidance counselor and one secondary and an elementary teacher. The teachers will
be selected randomly by the administration at the beginning of each academic year.
Professional Growth Administrative Policy
A total of 24 cumulative points over a six year period will be accepted as evidence of
professional growth.
● No more than 12 points will be accepted from Exeter-Milligan sponsored
workshops, etc (cohort, in-house PD activities, etc.)
● Must complete a minimum of 4 points per year unless the requirements have
been met.
● Teachers will document their points as part of their end of year check-out
requirement.
Professional Development Activity Point Criteria
I. Course Work
A. College or University Courses One credit hour = 4 points
B. Verified Audit of College or University Courses One credit hour = 1 point
II. Professional Meetings
A. Study groups, workshops (local or otherwise),
curriculum conference(s), and conventions. (ie. Zoom,
NSCAS, curriculum mapping, Blue River Cohort) Three seat hours = 1 point
(up to 4 points maximum)
B. Inservice Trainings - PD Friday’s NOT included. 4 viewing hours = 1 point
(up to 4 points maximum)
C. Professional presentations prepared and presented to
adults at a workshop, conference, and/or convention. One hour = 1 point
(Up to 5 points maximum)
III. Other Pre-Approved Activities
A. Professional research related to pedagogy. Administrative discretion -
(up to 4 points maximum)
B. Publication of work in professional journals or other
educational related materials. Administrative discretion - (up to 4 points maximum)
C. Travel to destinations related to the endorsed area or
subject matter of assigned curriculum. Points based upon administrative discretion
D. School visitations or accreditation/visitation
committees. One day = 3 points
E. Summer employment related to the endorsed area or
subject of assigned curriculum. Administrative discretion = up to 4 points maximum
F. Service as a “cooperating teacher” for a student teacher.
One semester = 4 points
One quarter = 2 points
G. Service as an appointive or elected officer of a professional organization. Administrative discretion = 4 points
H. Other activities not included above may be considered by the Professional Growth Committee after prior approval from the administration. Administrative discretion = 4 points
I. Participant in the EM Mentor/Mentee program, including Teammates. 1 School year = 2 points.
“Pre-Approved Activities” shall mean those professional growth activities proposed by the
certificated employee to be credits with points for purposes of professional growth under this
policy that have been approved for such purpose in writing by the Superintendent and Principal.
