The University of North Alabama (UNA) traces its roots to 1830 and LaGrange College, the first state-chartered college in Alabama. Today UNA is a thriving, modern institution of over 8,000+ students and one live lion, our beloved mascot Leo. Located in beautiful safe Florence, Alabama, UNA offers fully accredited, high-quality instruction from full-time, professional faculty in small classes, giving students the personal connection and encouragement to achieve great things.
UNA hosts a diverse population of international students from 64 countries on campus. International students can get the American college experience with a traditional garden-style, residential campus, active student body, Division I athletic teams and caring faculty and staff. Our students are personally assisted by staff in the Office of International Affairs to ensure a warm welcome full of “Southern Hospitality” and a continuing commitment to student success and well-being.

UNA Academic English Program (AEP) aims to provide challenging, comprehensive English instruction via multiple instructional modalities in order to foster academic preparedness, encourage diverse perspectives, and equip second language learners to thrive academically, professionally and personally.
UNA AEP is a pathway program that consists of five levels of instruction focused on skills-based curriculum. Language learners in the AEP program take courses in speaking, grammar, reading, listening and writing ranging from high beginner level (CEFR A1) to advanced (CEFR B1+) level of language proficiency. Students are placed into AEP by a remote computer-based assessment in conjunction with an interview and a writing test. Courses begin every eight weeks within the UNA academic calendar and are offered in the intensive format allowing students to progress through the program quickly. Classes meet daily from 9:00AM to 3:00PM and AEP terms begin in January, March, June, August and October each. In addition to learning invaluable English language skills, learners familiarize themselves with UNA campus and academic life, learn about university and classroom culture as well as become proficient in navigating the university’s learning management website.
