Founded in 1979, the UD English Language Institute (the ELI) is an integrated academic unit of the University of Delaware. The ELI offers innovative, high-quality in-person and online English instruction to international students and professionals who want to improve their language skills for university study or career enrichment.
At the UD ELI, you can...
> Develop your English skills in our Intensive English Program (IEP) or Accelerated University English Program (AUEP), among the best in the U.S.
> Earn university credit while studying English through our undergraduate pathways program, Academic Transitions.
> Prepare for success as a graduate student in our Graduate Conditional Admissions Program.
IEP and AUEP students are placed in one of seven levels of instruction, based on placement testing at the beginning of their first session. Our students then participate in 28 hours per week of comprehensive instruction and practice:
Listening/Speaking course (10 hours/week)
Reading/Writing course (10 hours/week)
Private or cluster tutoring (2-3 hours/week)
5-6 hours/week of Hub Activities: Conversation Couch, Writing Table, Book Club
For ALL of our programs, the ELI provides wrap-around services, supporting all facets of our students’ experiences, including university advising, placement, housing, host family programs, language partners, and an extensive student life component.
For the calendar year 2022, the University of Delaware ELI is offering generous scholarships for new students who are not already sponsored by a funding organization.
> All new full-time IEP and Grad-CAP students will receive an automatic $550 scholarship in their first session in 2022.
> All new full-time AT students will receive an automatic $2,022 scholarship in their first semester in 2022.
> New part-time, non-Delaware residents will receive a $275 scholarship in their first session in 2022.
UD offers generous scholarships to international undergraduate students. Awards range from $5,000 to $18,000 per year and are renewable for all four years. Awards are based on academic merit and diversity. All applicants are automatically considered for scholarships; there are no extra steps, no extra applications or essays to complete. Apply to your undergraduate program before January for the best chance for a scholarship.
As a state-funded, public university, we are not able to offer need-based financial aid to international students.
