Term 3 Grade 4 Lesson 1
Empathy and Respect
Being Respectful Learners
(Homework Included).
Why are we learning about Empathy and Respect?
Empathy is an understanding of what someone else is feeling. Having empathy helps you to be respectful and act in a thoughtful way towards others. We can have empathy for anybody, classmates, teachers, friends. Having empathy helps you respond in caring or respectful ways towards others.
What does it mean to be respectful? When you are being respectful, you’re considering how others want to be treated, and you are treating them that way. Some examples of being respectful are- Be helpful and kind. Be polite. Be fair. Use good manners or say hello. Not being mean. Not calling names. Not using put-downs.
One golden rule for being respectful is- considering how someone would like to be treated and then treating them that way.
Why is it important to be respectful?
It shows you care about how others feel. It helps you get along better with others. It helps you to persuade others of your point of view and creates a better chance of being able to get what you want. It helps us minimise misunderstandings and assumptions. It helps us have a better chance of making good decisions. It helps us to say more helpful things. We also work better together when we are respectful.
When you have empathy, or understand what others might feel, you are more likely to treat them the way that you would like to be treated – with respect. When you are respectful and have empathy for others, these skills will help you get along better with others and at school.
This week practise having empathy and being respectful learners.

ART
Today we are going to be drawing a poster for:
Book Week
The theme this year is old worlds, new worlds, other worlds
Book week is on the 21st - 27th August
This date must feature in your poster
This is a 2 week Art project so take your time and produce something marvelous!!!!!
What is a poster?
A Poster is an important medium to promote an event it delivers a social message. It is something that can create excitement amongst the targeted people and make them remember every detail easily.
If you want to create a buzz and get the audience excited about BOOK WEEK then your posters need to be visually impactful and have a lasting effect on people.
But every poster is different but make your effort count.
Why posters are important?
The right poster design sends a bold message to people.
It connects with the audience and makes them interested in your event.
It will create an interest in BOOK WEEK and give information to people.
Here I have 10 Poster design ideas to get you inspired:
A poster that is minimalistic
A poster that follows the mantra of less is more can sometimes be the best way to attract more people. Some things can actually be more impactful if they use less design or text or colors or even white space. They are bolder about conveying your message as it indicates that you don’t need big words or flashy colours to make a statement and impress people.
A poster that is colourful
If you want to appear bold use lots of colour in your posters. A color poster is more likely to grab the attention of the people if designed properly as colour psychology is a powerful tool like red is for power and blue for soothing, so select them according to the intended message.
A poster with lot of typography
Sometimes you need to deliver a lot of information about maybe an event. In such cases, typographic posters are best. They don’t need fancy images just a typeface that is appealing and visible to people. In such posters, content should be unique - all the information that is relevant to the poster’s purpose should be in the poster without making it look cluttered.
A poster with graphics
If you want to surround BOOK WEEK with mystery and interest keep text to a minimal This helps people interpret it any way they want while keeping the mystery intact and hence more audience will be interested in it.
A poster that creates nostalgia
If you want people to remember something from the old ear or give it a vintage feel use a vintage theme to design your posters. It makes people nostalgic, and they look forward to feeling that way.
A poster whose focal point is a photo
A picture speaks louder than words, is dramatic and also invokes emotion from people. If you have a good photo that perfectly sums up your message then using it as the central attention with few words is the way to go.
A poster that uses motivational quotes
Using motivational quotes or images can actually help in delivering a social message and making sure that it has an impact on the minds of the audience. This is good for BOOK WEEK.
A poster that beautifies nature
For events that are related to nature like conserving water or importance of sustainable development, using images of nature can be helpful.
A poster that uses shapes
Using different shapes makes the viewer eye the whole poster as one shape creates another shape. They can be used to contain text or heading.
A poster that has humor
Using sarcastic phrases or making the poster funny and silly is a great way to capture the attention of a passerby. Never hesitate to use this idea, as it can work way better than others but must be appropriate.
Additionally, you can design amazing posters using poster templates to get you started. These ideas and posters must have inspired you, so what you are waiting for, start designing.
HAVE FUN!!!!!!!
Please bring your posters to school so we can display them around the school.
Term 3 Grade 4 Lesson 2
Listening with attention
(Homework Included).
Why are we learning about Listening with attention?
At our school, we all work hard to be the best learners we can be. One skill for learning is to listen with attention. When we listen with attention, it is a way to show we care about the person who is speaking and what they are saying. It is also treating the person with respect.
When we listen with attention. It will help us to communicate better, get along with other people and do well in school.
We can do this by:
● Focusing on the person’s words.
● Not interrupting
● Asking questions to find out more.
● And repeating what you heard to show you understand.
Today you learned to practice the skills for listening with attention. What are those skills?
This week practice listening with attention.

Grade 4 Term 3 Lesson 4 Predicting feelings
(Homework Included).
Why are we learning about Predicting feelings
When you make plans or decisions that will affect another person, you need to consider how that person might feel about it. This is called predicting feelings. Predicting means thinking in advance, about what might happen. We can predict more correctly, when we:
● think about how others might react
● know my friend well enough to know how he or she would react
● think about what anyone in that situation might do
● put ourselves in someone else’s shoes.
In order to predict how other people feel about a situation we need to think ahead about how our actions might affect other people and to do this we need to have empathy for others.
This week practise, making predictions about others in different scenarios.

ART
This week in ArtSEL we are practicing a 1 Point Perspective drawing of a room.
This week we are practicing drawing a 1 Point Perspective of a room.
Now watch the video without pausing.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ERrJHCod2lY
Now read these tips and then re-watch the video and pause as often as you need to draw the 1 point perspective of the room.
Tips for using a ruler:
Ruler
Make sure you use your ruler. Remember to position your fingers across your ruler and press down so that your ruler does not move when you are drawing the line.
When you are drawing your lines press slightly so that they can be rubbed out.
Tips for drawing your room.
Using your ruler draw a rectangle or square in the middle of your page. Connect the corners inside your box or rectangle with an X.
Extend those X lines outside the box all the way to the corners of the paper.
Put a vanishing point dot in the center of the box or rectangle.
All lines that are drawn must be directed towards the vanishing point.
Vertical lines
The vertical lines must be straight from the top to the bottom. Do not tilt the ruler.
Horizontal lines
The horizontal lines must be in line with the bottom of the page or the eye level line. Do not tilt the ruler.
Darkened lines
Press hard on your pencil on any lines you want to keep. For example, if you are drawing your window or doors you would press harder on the pencil so they are darker than the lines that you are going to rub out. All other lines that you are going to rub out- press slightly so you can rub them out.
Borders around windows and doorframes
You can make a borderline around the windows or doorframes. Keep those lines quite close to the window or door.
Floors
When you are drawing your floor lines try to make the lines equal in width. That means that each lines width will have about the same thickness.
Furniture inside the room
You can choose whatever you like to put in your room. If you want to have a room without furniture only listen to the video until 5 minutes 30 seconds. If you want to add furniture, listen to the whole video.
Sizing of windows and doors and furniture
Remember objects that are smaller must be closer to the vanishing point. If you want the objects to be larger it will be further away from the vanishing point.
Erasing vanishing point lines
You will need to rub out some of your vanishing lines that you don’t want to see.
Now watch the video again.

Taking Others’ Perspectives
(Homework Included).
Taking Others’ Perspectives
What do you see in this picture?
This object looks different depending on your point of view or perspective. People often have different perspectives and feelings about things and situations. We all have our own point of view. When we see things from other people’s perspectives and look at things from their point of view for a moment, it can help us respond to them in a more respectful and caring way. This will help us get along better with others.
This week practise, Taking Others’ Perspectives about others in different scenarios.

Grade 4 Term 3 Lesson 6 August 23 - 27
Accepting differences
(Homework Included).
Sometimes we may make judgements about someone because they are different. That’s called prejudice. Prejudice means judging or forming an opinion about a person before even knowing him or her. Differences are often what makes people unique and interesting. And just because someone is different in one way doesn’t mean you can’t find other ways you’re similar.
It’s easy to judge or be prejudiced by what you see on the outside. You may decide you don’t want to hang around with someone based on what he or she looks like. We are all different in some way. Maybe you are really tall, where braces or have parents that speak a different language.
When we are prejudice and form opinions about people without getting to know them it is unfair, hurtful and disrespectful.
This week in ArtSEL, work on accepting differences and finding similarities so we can avoid prejudice and respond to others in a respectful way instead.

Disagreeing Respectfully
(Homework Included).
Disagreeing Respectfully
(Homework Included)
When we disagree disrespectfully with someone, we often end up in a big argument or hurt someone else’s feelings.
When we disagree disrespectfully, people often use blaming words and use a rude, mean or sarcastic voice. In this situation, we are not going to find a solution to a problem.
Whenever you make a statement that starts with “you always…” or “you never….” You are speaking in a way that blames the other person (e.g., “you never do your part of the work”).
When a person feels blamed, they feel angry and defensive or may want to argue back.
We can disagree respectfully with others in a number of ways.
First, listen with attention to their perspective. Remember to:
● look at the speaker
● focus on the person’s words
● repeat back what you heard to show you understand
● don’t interrupt
Then, assertively tell them your perspective in a respectful way. Remember to:
● use a clear, firm and respectful voice.
People are more likely to listen to your perspective if you are assertive.
When you acknowledge someone else’s perspective, even if you don’t agree with it, it shows that you are being respectful and you are more likely to come up with a solution.

Grade 4 Term 3 Lesson 8 August (Sept 6 - 10)
Responding with compassion.
(Homework Included).
Having empathy for others helps you show compassion for someone else. First, you must notice how others are feeling. Then you can feel and understand how it feels to be in their shoes.
When you say something that shows you care about another person and his or her problems, you show compassion. Another way to show compassion is to do something for the other person. Some things we could do to show compassion is:
Do something nice to help someone feel better.
Say something kind.
Do something helpful.
Show compassion.
When we receive compassion from someone else, it’s nice to say “thank you” to show we appreciate their help. It makes us feel: Like someone cared.
Sometimes it is difficult to show compassion when you are frustrated with someone else (sibling, friend, parent, teacher).
Sometimes people that annoy us do that because they are having a hard time. Have you ever tried to be annoying to someone else because you felt frustrated?
The best thing to do is try to think of positive thoughts about that person and ask them if there is anything wrong and if there anything we could to do to help them.
Next time try this and see what difference it can make.
This week practise Responding with compassion.
Let's listen to this video and try to do something kind for a member of your family and see what difference it makes in your home.

Introducing Emotion Management and Managing Anxiety
(Homework Included).
LET'S WATCH THIS VIDEO
https://www.youngminds.org.uk/parent/a-z-guide/anxiety/
When you have strong feelings, it’s hard for your brain to think. The feeling part of the brain can take over! When this happens, it’s like you “flip your lid” or lose control of the thinking part of the brain. Try to focus your attention on your body for clues about how you’re feeling. This gets your brain thinking again, so we can start to take back control.
Anxiety is worrying about something that might or might not happen. When we feel anxious about something our body starts to feel very uncomfortable. For example, if you’re nervous about a test; your hands get sweaty, your face gets hot and your heart is beating fast. These are the clues that the feeling part of your brain is taking over. Anxiety can also be experienced in different ways. Some people feel it in their body, like tight muscles or a sore tummy. Anxiety can also be experienced as racing thoughts, trouble paying attention, feeling uptight and restless. When you experience this, use your calming down strategies: such as slow deep belly breathing and positive self–talk.
This week practice managing your worries.
