Dear parents and grade two students, here is the ArtSEL lesson for the week beginning 7/06/2021
Responding to Playground Exclusion. No Homework.
So we have empathy for people who are left out of play.
When someone is being excluded on purpose, it’s a problem.
We can have strong feelings if we can't solve our problems. When this happens we need to show self control.
We need to always be polite to others, show manners at all times and be positive and assertive.
These lessons also:
-improve our emotional learning (Self-Regulation) by challenging our focus and persistence.
- enhance our fine motor skills.
- give us useful drawing skills that we can transfer into our future art learning.
Let’s use the STEP approach to solving this problem.
SAY the problem.
Think of solutions.
Explore consequences.
Pick the best solution.
Inviting people to join in is the compassionate and respectful thing to do.
Let's listen to the S T E P song.

Puppets
Brownie is feeling left out of the game. His friends have taken his ball and run away. How can we help Brownie?
Show the photo.
This is Malek. Malek was playing foursquare with his friends at recess when he heard Brandon ask if he could join in. His friends told Brandon they already had too many players, but Malek knows that’s not true.
Malek focuses his attention on Brandon’s face and body for clues about how he’s feeling. Malek thinks Brandon feels upset. How do you think Malek feels about that? (Sad. Concerned.) Malek has empathy for Brandon. He understands that Brandon is upset about being left out of the game. Malek thinks it’s not right for his friends to exclude Brandon. He wants Brandon to be included, but he’s not sure how to make that happen.
The other players are excluding Brandon on purpose. They aren’t thinking about how that makes him feel.
Let’s use the Problem-Solving Steps to help Malek solve the problem. Point to the Problem-Solving Steps Poster The first step is S:____ (Say the problem). What is the problem? (Malek wants to help Brandon be included.)
The next step is T:____ (Think of solutions). Think of a solution to Malek’s problem. For each solution, ask: Is it safe? Is it respectful? (Tell his friends excluding others is against the rules. Ask his friends to invite Brandon to play. Get some players to help him include Brandon.)
Now for the next step: E:____ (Explore consequences). Positive and negative if-then statements for each solution.
The last step is P: Pick the best solution. Malek doesn’t think it’s right to exclude anyone on purpose. He assertively tells his friends it’s not okay to pretend there are enough players and leave Brandon out, then asks his friends to invite Brandon to play.
Malek chose the solution he chose the compassionate, respectful solution for this problem. He has empathy for Brandon and is acting on it. Malek’s friends agree to invite Brandon to play foursquare with them. They all have fun playing together.
Art
In Art today we are going to do some problem solving drawings they are called optical illusions.
Optical Illusions can use color, light and patterns to create images that can trick to our brains.
Practice pressing your pencil hard or softly to get different tones or shades when colouring.
What you will need
A piece of paper
An eraser
A lead pencil
A texter
Let's get started
I would like you to draw these fun drawings.
Please Bring your drawings to school when we go back.
Dear parents and grade two students, here is the ArtSEL lesson for the week beginning 31/5/2021.
Taking Responsibility. Homework Included
When you hurt someone’s feelings, it’s important to take responsibility for your actions. Taking responsibility means admitting what you did, apologizing, and offering to make amends, that means offer to make things better.
Use the STEP approach to solving problems.
S - SAY the problem.
T - Think of solutions.
E - Explore consequences.
P - Pick the best solution.
It’s hard to take responsibility for what you’ve done, especially when you’ve hurt someone, but it’s the right thing to do. It’s also respectful.
