Over the next 5 weeks the students will be involved in a project focusing on drawing Zootopia characters, Nick Wild, Judy Hopps and Dawn Bellwether. The second part of the project is drawing a background behind the characters.
Please note, on one A3 piece of paper (or 2 A4 pieces of paper joined together), we will create 3 cartoon characters and a background. Therefore, for the first 3 weeks when we draw cartoon characters, please make sure they all fit on the one A3 piece of paper.
Parents, please be aware that google image searches can sometimes provide images not appropriate for primary aged children. Please supervise your child when undertaking these searches, or search for the images yourself prior to showing your child the relevant images.
Remember, no artwork is 'correct'. If you want to do things a bit differently, that would be amazing! Also remember, the more effort and focus you put into your artwork, the more you learn and the more proud of yourself you will be.
UNIT LEARNING INTENTION 1
To develop skills and knowledge of drawing cartoon characters.
Success Criteria:
I can identify a visual characteristics of a cartoon character.
I can describe how to draw a cartoon character.
I can create a cartoon character.
I can reflect on the aesthetic merits of my cartoon character and provide myself with Feedback to inform my Feedforward to add detail or refine.
For the next 3 weeks, we will be drawing 3 cartoon characters that will sit in the foreground of your artwork. Later we will add a background. This means that there are a few important points to note on where your characters sit in the picture frame. The positioning of where everything sits n your picture frame is called the 'composition':
Each week, make sure you will have room for all 3 characters to fit on 1 A3 piece of paper. You could slightly overlap your characters. Look at the quick example to the left.
Make sure your characters start at the bottom of the page. So their tummies will be at the bottom of the page and their heads will be roughly in the center line of the page.
If you like, you could first practise drawing each character, and then redraw your final 'good' character on your A3 paper.
Watch this short clip of Zootopia to see what the Zootopia characters look like. If you want to have no advertisements please use this site here: https://safeYouTube.net/w/oSRN (not the site on the left hand side).
You need A3 paper in landscape position. You will draw Nick Wilde on either the left, right or center of your paper. Keep this paper for the next 5 weeks.
Now, we are going to watch a step-by-step guide of how to draw Nick Wilde.
Watch the video and pause at different sections to follow instructions to draw. If you want to have no advertisements please use this site here: https://safeyoutube.net/w/JbpO (not the site on the left hand side).
Now keep this drawing for next week.
Can't wait to see you artwork uploaded to Seesaw and at our next Zoom meeting :)
-Internet.
-Grey Lead Pencil
-A4 paper. Recommended A3 paper (you could tape multiple pieces of A4 paper together)
Coloured pencils or textas.
Now we are going to draw Judy Hopps.
Watch this video of how to draw Judy Hopps through without pausing it or drawing. This helps us understand how the whole drawing is going to come together. If you want to have no advertisements please use this site here: https://safeYouTube.net/w/DuSN (rather than the one on the left hand side).
You will need last week's art work and add your drawing on the A3 paper in landscape position.

Now we are going to draw Dawn Bellwether.
But first... I want you to compare your first two drawings. I want you to think about:
What went well?
What could be improved?
What are you going to do slightly differently this week to make your last cartoon character even better?

Today, we are going to colour in our characters and practice controlling the pressure of the pencil to colour in. We are also learning how to blend and layer with coloured pencils.
The video will discuss the different pressures of colouring in.
Now watch the video through to the end. You will notice that the techniques get more and more complex.
Next, on a scrap piece of paper, or on the back of your artwork, I want you to practice the first 3 techniques you saw in the video.
After you have practiced blending and layering the first 3, start colouring in your characters using one of the techniques.
Light pressure means not pressing hard.
Heavy pressure means pressing hard.
Gradual pressure means the colour changes gradually from darker to lighter.
Burnishing means doing gradual pressure (from dark to light) and then rubbing it out with the rubber.
Hatching means using lines for shading
Cross-hatching means using lines one-way then going over it another way.
Layering means using different colours to make a new colour or to make a special effect.
Please note:
If your hand hurts, you are pressing too hard.

This week in art we are learning to draw one point perspective (illusion drawing) This shows how things appear to get smaller as they get further away.
Watch the videos and complete the drawing.

This week in SEL, we are learning how to join in a new group.
Now to the Art.
This week in ArtSEL we are learning to draw textured patterns.
Now draw your textured patterns on your hand and stick them onto your background to show how you can join in a group.
