Grade 3 Term 3 Lesson 1
Empathy and Respect
Being Respectful Learners
(Homework Included).
When you are being respectful, you’re considering how others want to be treated and treating them that way. Thinking about how you like to be treated can help you decide how to treat others.
How can you show your teacher that you are respectful learners?
by:
● focusing our attention,
● using our eyes to watch
● using our ears to listen
● and our brain to hold our attention.
This also helps us to concentrate and ignore distractions.
When we focus our attention, we are ready to listen. To really listen, focus attention on the speaker and think about words you are hearing. This helps you remember what you hear.
When we listen, we focus on the speaker, keep our body still and wait for my turn to speak.
Focusing attention and listening are ways to help us learn. They are also ways to show respect. Being respectful helps you to learn! Everyone deserves a chance to learn, just like everyone deserves to be treated with respect.
This week practice being respectful learners.

ART
Today we are going to be drawing a poster for:
Book Week
The theme this year is old worlds, new worlds, other worlds
Book week is on the 21st - 27th August
This date must feature in your poster
This is a 2 week Art project so take your time and produce something marvelous!!!!!
What is a poster?
A Poster is an important medium to promote an event it delivers a social message. It is something that can create excitement amongst the targeted people and make them remember every detail easily.
If you want to create a buzz and get the audience excited about BOOK WEEK then your posters need to be visually impactful and have a lasting effect on people.
But every poster is different but make your effort count.
Why posters are important?
The right poster design sends a bold message to people.
It connects with the audience and makes them interested in your event.
It will create an interest in BOOK WEEK and give information to people.
Here I have 10 Poster design ideas to get you inspired:
A poster that is minimalistic
A poster that follows the mantra of less is more can sometimes be the best way to attract more people. Some things can actually be more impactful if they use less design or text or colors or even white space. They are bolder about conveying your message as it indicates that you don’t need big words or flashy colours to make a statement and impress people.
A poster that is colourful
If you want to appear bold use lots of colour in your posters. A color poster is more likely to grab the attention of the people if designed properly as colour psychology is a powerful tool like red is for power and blue for soothing, so select them according to the intended message.
A poster with lot of typography
Sometimes you need to deliver a lot of information about maybe an event. In such cases, typographic posters are best. They don’t need fancy images just a typeface that is appealing and visible to people. In such posters, content should be unique - all the information that is relevant to the poster’s purpose should be in the poster without making it look cluttered.
A poster with graphics
If you want to surround BOOK WEEK with mystery and interest keep text to a minimal This helps people interpret it any way they want while keeping the mystery intact and hence more audience will be interested in it.
A poster that creates nostalgia
If you want people to remember something from the old ear or give it a vintage feel use a vintage theme to design your posters. It makes people nostalgic, and they look forward to feeling that way.
A poster whose focal point is a photo
A picture speaks louder than words, is dramatic and also invokes emotion from people. If you have a good photo that perfectly sums up your message then using it as the central attention with few words is the way to go.
A poster that uses motivational quotes
Using motivational quotes or images can actually help in delivering a social message and making sure that it has an impact on the minds of the audience. This is good for BOOK WEEK.
A poster that beautifies nature
For events that are related to nature like conserving water or importance of sustainable development, using images of nature can be helpful.
A poster that uses shapes
Using different shapes makes the viewer eye the whole poster as one shape creates another shape. They can be used to contain text or heading.
A poster that has humor
Using sarcastic phrases or making the poster funny and silly is a great way to capture the attention of a passerby. Never hesitate to use this idea, as it can work way better than others but must be appropriate.
Additionally, you can design amazing posters using poster templates to get you started. These ideas and posters must have inspired you, so what you are waiting for, start designing.
HAVE FUN!!!!!!!
Please bring your posters to school so we can display them around the school.

Grade 3 Term 3 Lesson 4 (August 9 - 13)
Respecting Similarities and Differences.
(Homework Included)
Why are we learning about Respecting Similarities and Differences.
To have empathy, we need to be able to recognise how others are feeling – even if it’s different from how we are feeling. Remember empathy means understanding what someone else is feeling. Having empathy helps you act respectfully and in a caring way towards others.
In friendships, we can be different in lot of ways yet be similar. Sometimes, we decide we are different from other people, only by how they look. We need to look beyond this and find out what people like to do and how they feel. We can get to know them and find out things about them and in which ways we are similar and different.
We can find out more about other people by:
*being friendly and talking to them *asking them about what they like
*listening carefully to what they want to talk about *inviting them to play with you at recess *sitting with them at lunch
Sometimes we can get, so wrapped up in our own feelings that we don’t notice that others could be having different feelings about the same thing. In any situation, we might have two people that have different feelings about the same thing. Paying attention and understanding that others have both similar and different feelings is part of empathy

Understanding Complex Feelings
(Homework Included)
Understanding Complex Feelings (Homework Included).
It is possible to have more than one feeling at the same time. For example, you may feel excited about doing a presentation but also quite nervous.
Part of growing up is understanding that feelings can be complicated. For example, you might have a friend who plays with you regularly some of the time but your friend might play with someone else on other days. Just because your friend doesn’t play with you on one day doesn’t mean he/she doesn’t like you or that he/she won’t want to play with you next time.
When you have several feelings at once it can be confusing. Try to talk to your friends when you are confused and try to find out more information before you get upset.

ART
This week in art we are continuing with designing our boomerangs using aboriginal symbols.
Symbols are used by Aboriginal people in their art to preserve their culture and tradition. They are also used to depict various stories and are still used today in contemporary Aboriginal Art.
There is no written language for Australian Aboriginal People so in order to convey their important cultural stories through the generations it is portrayed by symbols/icons through their artwork.
It is imperative to pass on information to preserve their culture. These vary from region to region, they are generally understood and form an important part of Australian Indigenous art.
Symbols are traditionally used as an important part of contemporary Aboriginal art.
The Aboriginal people have for thousands of years used artistic designs and symbols to convey stories and messages which are incredibly important in their culture.
Body paint used in important ceremonies has special meaning to Aboriginal people. The symbols used are specifically chosen for certain ceremonies of religious significance to the community.
Most of the symbols used in Aboriginal iconography are relatively simple but to tell a more complex story they are used in more elaborate combinations.
In a Water Dreaming painting to give an example, a U shape symbol is used for a man but if he is sitting next to a water hole, concentric circles would be incorporated and spiral lines showing running water. The artist is telling a story that the man by the waterhole “the waterman” is summoning rain to come.
Traditional aboriginal dot paintings represent a story, generally regarding hunting or food gathering and usually have traditional aboriginal symbols imbedded throughout the painting. These symbols, when explained, give a completely whole new meaning to the painting.
The paintings consist of thousands of “Dots” and executed the traditional way, takes the artist hundreds of hours of committed attentiveness just to “fill in the background.”
Western Desert art is given its unique character by the use of dots. Dots symbolise stars, sparks, burnt ground etc. as the base of an Aboriginal painting is the organisation of the earth and the ancestral connection with it.
The artists developed a way of avoiding or hiding their secrets/meanings to the marketplace to protect their people. The dots, which became much more prominent from the Papunya region from 1973, are really quite important in more ways than one.
Dot s ‘mask, even ‘camouflaging sanctified meanings.
Click on some of the artists and explore their works.
Current artists in vogue include:
Gloria Petyarre, Jeannie Petyarre, Dulcie Long Pula and Mary Rumble popular for their iconic representation of Medicine Leaves, Reggie Sultan, Tarisse and Sarrita King, Anna Price Petyarre, Gabriella Possum Nungurrayi, Michelle Possum Nungurrayi, Eddie Blitner, Rusty Peters, Ju Ju Wilson, Mark Nodea and Tommy Carroll amongst others.

Understanding different perspectives
(Homework Included)
Taking Others’ Perspectives
What do you see in this picture?
This object looks different depending on your point of view or perspective. People often have different perspectives and feelings about things and situations. We all have our own point of view. When we see things from other people’s perspectives and look at things from their point of view for a moment, it can help us respond to them in a more respectful and caring way.
This will help us get along better with others.

Grade 3 Term 3 Lesson 7 (August 30 - 3 Sept)
Conversations and compliments
(Homework Included)
Making new friends can be hard. One way to is by starting a conversation – talking to each other in a meaningful way. When you start a conversation with someone, you show that you are interested in getting to know that person and what they think or feel. You’re showing empathy.
Another way to start a conversation is to give a compliment. A compliment is when we say something nice to someone. A compliment should be genuine and sincere (you should really mean it). Giving a compliment shows that you care about someone else’s feelings – you want someone else to feel good or to be friendly.
Why would you want to start conversations with other people ?
To get to know them better. To make a new friend. To find out more about them.
When is it difficult to start a conversation? Feeling shy. Not knowing what to say. Not knowing if the person would want to talk to you.

ART
Today in Art we are going to draw cartoon characters.
Your cartoon characters need to start a conversation with each other.
What you will need:
Grey lead pencil
Rubber
Any piece of paper you have.
Any colouring materials
Let's begin
Let's watch these videos
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mOhajtMP8lk
Remember to sketch very lightly by restricting the amount of pressure you put on the pencil.
This is so you can rub out unwanted lines without a trace.
Once you are happy with your cartoon you can add some colour.
Have fun!!!!!
I really enjoy looking at the effort you put into your Art. You should be proud of yourself.
Grade 3 Term 3 Lesson 8 (Sept 6 - 10)
Joining in
(Homework Included)
Trying to merge or join into a group can be hard especially if we:
*Don’t stand around long enough *ask to join in a soft voice * ask too quietly or we are too passive
When this happens: The group won’t notice you or know you want to join but choose to ignore you.
To help others join in a group, people in the group could:
*Notice that others might want to play
*ask others if they want to play
*think about how it feels to be left out
*make room in your game for others.
When you invite or help others to join in an activity, you:
Need to notice that they want to join in.
Ask them to join in and help them to feel included.
If we are too pushy or too bossy or too aggressive - It won’t work.
Instead, we could use strategies:
● Stand nearby and watch for a little while
● give a compliment to 1 of the players
● ask a question about the game or offer help
ask politely and assertively if you could play

ART
In Art this week we are going to be making a piece of Art that emphasises our SEL theme of 'joining in'. You will trace around your hands, cut them out then position them any way you want to on the paper. Next you will decorate the background. You may want to copy one of these images I have provided.
What you will need
Two pieces of paper. One to trace around your hands, the other, coloured if possible, to design a background.
A grey lead pencil for tracing your hand.
Rubber.
Black pen or marker.
Glue to stick your hands to the background.
Scissors.
Let"s Begin:
Read through the task. Trace around your hands.
Decide how you are going to design your image?????
Are your hands going to have patterns????
Is your background going have patterns????
Think about it. Have a draught in your mind.
Whatever you decide you will need to trace as many hands as you need for your design.
Look at all the patterns you can make. (Images on your left)
Take your time to draw the patterns.
You will need to cut your hands out and set them aside for now. If you are putting the patterns on your hands, draw the patterns before you cut out your hands.
Designing your background.
Think!!!!!!! What is the best way to make the hands stand out. Colours, contrasts, placements??????
Look for ideas on the left.
Once your hands are cut out arrange them on the background. They can be touching to emphasise our SEL theme of 'joining in' or you can arrange your hands any way you like on the background.
Enjoy, Create, Problem Solve and Make Decisions!!!
LAST WEEK OF SCHOOL PLANNING WEEK
We will do this lesson together.
Grade 3 Term 3 Lesson 9 (Sept 13 - 17)
Showing compassion (Homework Included).
(Homework Included)
Having empathy for others helps you show compassion for someone else. First, you must notice how others are feeling. Then you can feel and understand how it feels to be in their shoes.
When you say something that shows you care about another person and his or her problems, you show compassion. Another way to show compassion is to do something for the other person. Some things we could do to show compassion is:
Do something nice to help someone feel better.
Say something kind.
Do something helpful.
Show compassion.
When we receive compassion from someone else, it’s nice to say “thank you” to show we appreciate their help. It makes us feel like someone cared.
Sometimes it is difficult to show compassion when you are frustrated with someone else (sibling, friend, parent, teacher). Sometimes people that annoy us do that because they are having a hard time. Have you ever tried to be annoying to someone else because you felt frustrated? The best thing to do is try to think of positive thoughts about that person and ask them if there is anything wrong and if there anything we could to do to help them.
