Hi everyone. Glade you found the Grade 5 site. Hope you are all going well at home!
It was great that I got to teach you in the week of 24-28 May. This means you have a strong idea of what you will be doing during the lockdown week (May 31-June 4).
To help make things clear, I have included Session 1 (what we have done at school) and session 2 (what you will be doing during lockdown week)
Watch this video about the history of printing:
Remember these pictures:
When we looked at them, we discussed the following:
-The importance of using the right amount of ink and experimenting when we do prints.
-The importance of having detail without using fine lines.
-Prints sometimes print in reverse and in the negative.
Remember watching this video:
We learnt about transferring our design from paper to an etching surface.
We also discovered that we will be using an etching surface that is 10.7 centimeters by 10.7 centimeters (107 millimeters)
Through research, develop lots of designs that you think would make an excellent print. you needed to consider:
-Do your designs have a clear structure?
-Are you able to apply detail to your designs considering that all lines will be quite thick?
-Is your design challenging for you to achieve but not impossible?
-Have you developed your design and created lots of options for yourself (remember, no perfectionists when you are developing your design)
-Are you copying directly from the internet, or are you using the internet to research to help inspire your own unique design. Remember, if you copy directly off an image on the internet, you are not creating your own artwork, you are simply reproducing others artworks. This is not what a real artist does :)
Now that you have developed lots of designs, you probably have an idea of what you want to create as your final print.
Try to remember your favorite design. Once you have, draw your final good copy. Remember, the etching board you will be using is 10.7. by 10.7cm (107 by 107mm)
Make sure it is extremely neat and clear. The more effort you put in now, the more excited you will be coming into the Art Room when we begin our etching and then create prints!
Remember to bring your final design into school when we get back, that way you will be on task and ready to etch!
Final thoughts: If we are in lockdown for longer than a week, we will convert this project into the grade 6 project that shares some similarities. Feel free to see what the grade 6 students are doing on this site.
Stay safe and have fun learning at home :)
For this unit, we will be creating an unique intricate pen drawing. You will focus your learning on shading through line and dot. This is a style of are that was especially prominent over 100 years ago when the mass printing press was great at printing line but not tone. Thus tone was achieved through line and dot
Here are a few examples of pen drawings:

Now give it a go yourself.
Once you have done this, check out the images below using different types of 'hatching'. Now try drawing these shapes using the different hatching techniques.
Once you have completed your work, upload it to the Art folder in Seesaw. I'll be able to give you feedback on your learning. Looking forward to our zoom meeting on Monday at 1:00pm!
