Dear parents and grade one students, here is the ArtSEL lesson for the week beginning 7/06/2021
Inviting people to Join in. No Homework
So we have empathy for people who are left out of activities.
These lessons also:
-improve our emotional learning (Self-Regulation) by challenging our focus and persistence.
- enhance our fine motor skills.
- give us useful drawing skills that we can transfer into our future art learning.
If someone won’t let you join in use the STEP approach to solving this problem.
SAY the problem.
Think of solutions.
Explore consequences.
Pick the best solution.
Let's listen to the S T E P song.

PUPPETS
Snail reads a book aloud with the teacher. Puppy quietly watches them read, wanting to join. He approaches, but then backs off.
Snail (looks at Puppy, goes back to reading, looks at Puppy again): Would you like to read with us?
Puppy: "Yes, I would. The book sounds really good."
Snail: It is. Come and sit next to me."
Teacher: "Snail, you noticed that Puppy wanted to read with us. You had empathy for Puppy and assertively invited Puppy to join in. That means you asked him to do what we were doing."
Puppy: "Thanks, Snail. It feels good to be invited to join in."
Teacher: "Snail and Puppy will read together while we talk more about inviting others to join in."
Today we learnt it is important to notice and have empathy for children who are left out of play.
Inviting others to play is the right thing to do. Playing with others is a way to get to know them better.
Remember to practise to include others if they are on their own.
Show the photo.
Abraham is standing by himself watching Rita and Lamarr paint during their after-school program. They are painting a picture together of underwater creatures. It looks like fun, and Abraham likes to paint. He wishes he could paint with them. Lamarr notices Abraham watching. Lamarr knows what it’s like to feel left out of a fun activity. He says to Rita, “Let’s ask Abraham to paint with us.” But Rita says, “We don’t need any more help.” Now Lamarr has a problem.
Let’s look at the Problem-Solving Steps poster. What is the first step? (S: Say the problem.) What is Lamarr’s problem? (He wants to ask Abraham to paint, but Rita doesn’t.)
How is Abraham feeling? (Left out. Wants to paint.)
What is the second Problem-Solving Step?
(T: Think of solutions.)
Think of what Lamarr could do? (Tell Rita he wants to ask Abraham to paint with them so he doesn’t feel left out. Just invite Abraham to join in anyway. Choose to do a different painting with Abraham. Get Abraham another piece of paper and have him paint next to them.)
How will Abraham feel if Lamarr asks him to paint? (Included. Happy.)
Lamarr assertively says to Rita, “Rita, it’s no fun being left out. Let’s ask Abraham to paint with us.” Rita says, “Yeah, I guess you’re right.” Lamarr asks, “Abraham, do you want to paint with us?” Abraham smiles back and says, “Sure. Thanks!” He comes over to join them. Rita hands him a brush and smiles.
ART
Today in Art we are going to imagine that we are insects.
What would we look like?
What you will need:
A grey lead pencil
A piece of paper
Texters, coloured pencils or pens.
Let's get started !
Look at all the different insects pictures on the left.
Look for ideas that you can use when creating your insect.
There is an insect body in one of the pictures on the left.
This is to help you get started and remember all the body parts of an insect. that we need to draw.
Have fun and please bring your insects to school when we go back.
Dear parents and grade one students, here is the ArtSEL lesson for the week beginning 31/5/2021.
Homework
(There is a Compass link to the homework)
Fair Ways to Play.
Homework Included
All student need to play in a fair way by Sharing, trading and taking turns.
Let's listen to the song

Sharing, trading, and taking turns are fair and fun ways to play. Sometimes it’s hard to share and take turns with things we love to play with. When we share, trade and take turns with our friends, it helps us to get along better with others.
Use the STEP approach to solving problems.
SAY the problem.
Think of solutions.
Explore consequences.
Pick the best solution.
ART
Today in Art we are going to draw some bees.
Let's watch this video.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ho4aUHY6fss
What you will need:
Grey Lead
Rubber
paper
yellow and black pencil
black marker
Before you draw, think about the size of the beehive we have drawn at school.
The bees will need to be a lot smaller than the beehive.
DRAW in GREY LEAD first then you can go over your bees with a black marker.
Give yourself feedback on your artwork (What parts are you proud of and what parts could be improved?).
Give yourself feedforward (based on your feedback, how can you improve your artwork through refining it and/or adding more detail?)
Once you are happy with your drawing, trace over with texters if you want to.
Let's draw some bees.

Enjoy the buzzing bees and see you soon!!!
Remember to do your homework!!
Please bring your bees to school.
